SL, as I think about it, this is becoming quite complicated. This is why: When you buy an archery license in NY it entitles you to hunt during the "archery season" which is before and after the "regular" gun season. The archery license is the only license that you would need to have in order to hunt on the land near BT's house in October.
Now the question is does the archery license entitle you to hunt in Westchester near Skipmaster's house? The reason that this is complicated is that although the only deer hunting allowed in Westchester is with the bow, the season which runs from October 13 through December 31 is considered the Westchester "regular season". I have always purchased the archery license, because I am bowhunting. But after this discussion, I am starting to think that because I am bowhunting only in Westchester that I might be buying the wrong license, and that I should be buying a "regular big game" license instead. I have the phone number for Jeremy Hurst (518-402-8867) with the NY DEC and I will give him a call later today to ask the question. BTW, he is the guy who responded to BT regarding the Rage "barbed" issue.

After talking to one of the supervisors there I found out that all I have to do is provide proof of having a hunting license before and a New Brunswick License is good enough as well as providing proof that I have finished the bow hunters course up here.
All should be good now but the guy on the phone first didn't know all that and he understood that I needed both licenses the first time to the state.
We are going to send in the applications on Monday as soon as hopesman gets his card for his bow course on Sunday so we can make sure all is good.
I am going to send them a copy of a moose license, a copy of a deer license (neither from last year but that is ok), a copy of this years resident license, a copy of my course card proving Bow hunting course has been completed and a copy of my drivers license for the photo ID. That should do it.

That is looking great BT. When we apply for the extra doe tag the draw will not be untill the first of Oct., correct? How long will it be getting the licenses out after that as we leave for your place 3 weeks from the Oct. 1? Do you think this is going to be to close a time frame for trying to get the extra tags?

They give you the Doe tags at the time of issuance. Not like back home Did you confirm that they can do the turn around that fast? They should be able too but you know how it goes I just put the camera's on stand two but I cant cover one of the routes so we will just have to say that whatever we see tomorrow will probably be a good indication of what is happening there

SL, and All Interested Parties, I just spoke with Jeremy Hurst of NY DEC. Jeremy understood why this was confusing, but he did verify that the only license that you will need to buy is the non-resident archery license for $110.00. Buying this license will allow you to bowhunt in BT's area during the "archery season", AND also allow you to bowhunt in Westchester during the Westchester "regular season".
He did go on to say that because this is the first time that you are applying for a non-resident bowhunting license that you would have to apply via the regular mail, and produce the bowhunting certification proof. After this year you will be in the system, and will be able to apply over the phone or online.
Lastly, there is a $10.00 fee to apply for a Deer Management Permit (DMP). You are charged this amount even if you are not granted the permit. Because of this, you may want to make the 3S WMU (Westchester) your first choice for the Permit, because there are virtually unlimited Permits available for Westchester, and there is very little chance that you will be turned down. BT and Skip, do you agree with this line of thought?

I'd make 3S my second choice because they are guarenteed(never seen anyone ever get turned down). you will have your highest chance of drawing for dutchess with your first choice.

Something that I have been wondering about regarding our trip is just how you folks in NY dress for the hunt and what do you take along with you on a typical morning or evening. I ask this for two reasons; I am totally new to bow hunting and certainly new to hunting in the kind of setting that we will experience in your area from climate point of view especially. Would someone have a picture of themselves all outfitted for the hunt and carrying everything that they would want to take with them? An inventory of what you have in your pockets or pack would be helpful I'm betting that there are a lot of similarities with what I would normally do in my rifle hunts but I also expect some significant differences and would like to be prepared for them
