S&H U.S. Tour thread

Well .... I waited for them to start this thread but since I am going to want to post more info. at first (I think) , I am taking the opportunity to start this thread.

Stilllearning and Hopesman are making a trip to NY for whitetail this year and Myself and Skipmaster are going to do our best to get them venison for the trip home

Hopefully Poughkeepsie will yield enough venison on the hoof but Skipmaster has made a very generous offer to assit with a Westchester set up should things fail to pan out here in Poughkeepsie on day 1 and two.

Here are 3 of 4 stands that will be available for the Canadian crew.

Stand One

This is the #1 stand over the first 4 years and was #2 last year.
Small single seat with a bow holder attached , 15' off the ground with an intersection of 4 travel routes which form a common hub.



Trail #1 above : least used - front right of the stand platform - 10 & 15 yard shot windows.
10 yard broadside (hard shot) 15 yard hard quarter ( easier shot)









Trail #2 above : Most productive trial - left side of platform- 12 - 18 - 20 yard - one slight quarter and 2 broadside shots.



Trail #3 above : second most productive trail - forward left - 22 yards - Broadside shot only

Trail #4 - no shot on trail

Stand #2 : Second most productive all years
45 yards below stand #1 - 3 intersections intersecting in a hub with one lone trail passing the hub , 10 yards beyond walking trail.

Above : this trail leads past the stand and only deer which are coming out of it will offer a shot as this trial is straight into the shooter otherwise.
Hard quartering shot on passing - 8 yards - 10 yards





trail 2 : first pic is no shot but allows the shooter to see incoming and has a total blockage of view 10' long which allows the bow to be draw without concern.
Next is the exit from the blind spot.
20 yard. shot broadside




Trail on offside of walking path
One shot opportunity - 30 yards



Adjacent property across from the face of the stand.

Stand #3: 50 yards west of the stand #2 : 4 trails with 2 hubs - recently used heavily - light use 4 years prior



Trail 1 :left of the stand 10 yard shot either hard quarter or no shot depending on direction of the deers travel.



Trail 2 :Front left of stand first opening - 18 yards - broadside



Trail 2 - front of stand - slight quarter - 20 yards



Trail 3 - broadside - 15 yards



Trail 3 - no shot - allows view of incoming with large blind spot to ready for draw.

So far....these are the set ups so far.

I took a better look at my shot angles today and decided to equip with the Shockwaves rather than the Spitfires.
Shockwaves cannot skip or jack knife and although I have never seen a spitfire skip....I want to cover for every potential problem.

BT thanks for starting this. I thought about doing this last week for about 10 seconds and then put my head back in the sand thinking about so many other things as well as this trip. Every time I thought about the trip I began to grin like a old chestier cat.

I have got my head elsewhere right now as I have been preparing for the Firearms and hunter safety course over the next two weeks. I was teaching tonight and All went well. It is real nice to get the first teaching season ever under my belt.
Man O man though did my mouth ever get some dry as the nerves got to me at first. Then I settled in and got it done.

We have been working on some background work for the trip up here making sure we have the right paper work to cover all licensing requirements and we now feel comfortable that we have it. We still need to find out from Canada customs what we need to do to bring back the meat we get. gotta think positive. We also have to get what is called a green card for the bows so they do not think we purchased them while we were over there.
All in all it is starting to fall in place and the government agencies on both sides have been really helpful. I know that is hard to believe but they have.

I do know one thing those setups look great.
I have not had a chance to look it up but what are the regulations for Camo down there and what is the temperature like at the time we are going to be down?
I look forward to meeting both of you in person FINALLY after all the help you folks have given us.

the weather "should" be mild in mid october. I would be suprised if it was below 45 during the day.......it may be closer 70 or higher and drop to low 50's at night

wear whatever camo you want. no orange for bow season.

i don't have pics of my spots, but i have spots and deer.........i can't wait to meet you as well.

I have nearly drown from sweating on nov 1st before(the old opener). I wouldn't imagian it will be cold at all.........although i have seen blizzards in mid oct before.

we'll let you know what they are calling for closer to those dates

I just checked the "average" temps for that part of NY for October 20th. 38 at night to 59 in the middle of the day! It should be a walk in the park for you NB boys!

I never thought about it untill Hopesman metioned it. Up here if the season has started and you buy a hunting license you have to wait 48 hours before you can harvest a deer. This is to keep people from buying a license and then taging a deer some just shot so the person shooting can continue to hunt.
Is there any such law down their that states we have to wait after making the purchase of the license? If so how long do we have to wait?

Hey BT, I just picked up on this thread and looked at all of the stand pictures They look great and that first stand looks just like the Wally mart one that I just picked up for use here in about 3 weeks Gonna start some scouting next week to find a good location for it. For sure I will never find a location where deer are coming and going on almost every angle like yours The question as to temperatures was on my mind SL and it's nice to know that it won't likely be cold at all. Now if the rain just stays away BT, I notice in your driving directions that you avoided route 84 which actually looks like a more direct route to your location. Is this because you wanted to route us away from Hartford? Also google maps shows you on Noxon Rd. Is that correct?

Nope....shoot your deer and then buy your licence ;D
You dont have tagging stations like back home either.
You report on the net or by phone
