Just a little note to all you "hog chasers" that will be going on this hunt.
MAKE SURE you use the directions here. The owner said if you use Map Quest, it will lead you to the WRONG area. If we are ALL going to meet at the steakhouse, that won't be a problem anyway.
Breezewood is a VERY small place. No actual main street...just the main road that goes through it. About 500 yards takes you through the whole "village".....so don't have any fear of not finding the restaurant. Once you get to the "town", you can see the restaurant from anywhere on the highway within the town.
There are two nice sized restaurants, a few fast food places, several motels and a few houses. The restaurant we will be meet at is called "The Family Steakhouse" and does serve some pretty good food.
The Wilderness hunting area is about 15-20 minutes from there. Everett is very small too. A few small stores and a fairly nice sized grocery store which will be about 6-7 miles from where we are hunting.
The thing that makes the area so active and so easily accessible is the fact that Route 30, (a well traveled east/west road), the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 70 all converge in the general area. Breezewood was known for many years as the "town of motels" because that was basically all there was....motels for truckers and tourists passing through.
Tomorrow, (Saturday) I am making a trip to the Wilderness to look it over some and take some photos to put up here. I have talked to the owners and there is a hunt scheduled for tomorrow so I hope to get some photos of some of the kills as well as what they have in the way of animals in the holding pens.
The place is only about 1 1/2 hrs drive from where I live, the weather is supposed to be great tomorrow and I hope to give you all a better idea of the place we are going.
They told me I'm welcome to take all the pics I want but probably will not be able to get into the actual hunting area because of the hunt.
At any rate, I hope to have the pics on here by Sunday evening and hope that they will build your enthusiasm even more.
Personally, I have been getting my list ready and biting my nails!!
I will be bringing FOUR 10-mile range walkie talkies if anyone doesn't have any, and if some of you bring you own we can set them all up on the same channel.
For those of you who have never hunted hogs, get ready for some action. These boys CAN be bad, get mad quick....especially if they are hit and will use every last breath to try to take you out.
If you hit a hog, you will have to pay for it whether it is found or not so we DO have to make it a team effort to help another find a hog if they have hit one....and maybe even finish it off.
I think one of the main things to remember is that if you are hunting from the ground, always have a good "escape route" planned....... always. If one of them fixes his little "beady" eyes on you, get ready to shoot straight and fast or use your escape route.......quickly.
BT will tell you....they can cover 40-50 yards in seconds and a 240 lb hog at 50 yards becomes a seemingly 500 lb hog at 50 ft. .....and appears to be 700 lbs at 3-4 ft.
(Hence the KNIFE BT suggested and the "escape route" mentioned here)
The big hog I shot last year on my hunt with BT that tried to take BT out only ran 12-15 feet after the assault on BT before the hog fell over and expired. A double lung , really good hit that drew a lot of blood from the hog and yet he still ran about 30 yrds up hill and another approx 40 yards along the field to where BT was and STILL tried to go after BT just seconds before succumbing to the massive damage done by the Sonic. They are tough!!!
I sincerely hope all of you are looking forward to this hunt as much as I am and I KNOW as much as BT is!!
