Say, just curious. We've been picking choke-cherries recently, and I was wondering what chokecherry wood would be like? If it's good wood, i'de like to make one if I can find a big enough tree. I'm thinking not too many people can say they have a bow made of choke-cherry wood.

I dont think its a good wood but dont quote me on it. It seems like it would be hard to find straight. Although I can only think of 1 tree.
Right now I am getting ready to do my first r/d bow. Before I put my order in I was wondering what you guys thing would be best plan of action. I have 1 Osage core. 1" thick 6 fee long. I was thinking of splitting it into 2 pieces and having 2 bows. Then I thought I might come in underweight (45#). What do you think is best plan of action.
Also is the preflattend boo truly ready for glue up? Because Im not sure if I have to wood working skills to back with boo. And would I have to thin hickory backing to use it or does it come in the right size?

All - I have had a rather unsettled time of it for a while... Sorry to drop out like that! Right now I am sitting in a hotel in Montreal Canada waiting to fly out for a caribou hunt. This morning the weather was a bit on the bad side, this afternoon there were problems with the local indians and they felt it was not safe to fly us out. We hope to get out in the morning - please cross your fingers for us! I will get back to Colorado Sept. 23rd and will try to get caught up here once back and home again. Whew! I look forward to building a few bows, and helping get a few others built. Finding my next job, and probably keeping my current wife. Yeah, some times it gets really interesting!!! Stay tuned, I'll be back in touch in after I go tag that big caribou that's waiting for me up here.

SMJ, glad to see you back from the hunt...I bet that was a blast! I hope you have time to look over this Hickory backed Jatoba bow I just finished up recently. 66"overall - 64" ntn, 47-48lb @ 27". finish is a couple coats of light pecan stain overall and 5 coats of tru-oil...I love that stuff!Surprisingly little handshock! Radiused shelf cut almost to center, but thickened up the riser with maple accented jatoba with overlay of walnut on belly, as well as jatoba under walnut riser overlay. Grip is waxed cordage..I like the feel of this and will use it again. It DID develope a hairline fret just off the fade on the top limb...look close you can see the repair I tried...took off the finish and ran some superglue in the fret and refinished. Didin't appear to be lifting, but I hope it holds thru hunting season. I WILL be carrying it. Comments are welcome
