smj, I built a wood/glass lam longbow 20 years ago. I also required a hot box. I only know a small amount but am reading up on the subject. Thanks for that help.

Well, I guess it's time to do this... Meet "Little Wonder". Hickory backed BooFloo (carbonized and vert, grain). She was formerly maple bellied, but crysalled befor final tillering, so I shaved it off. 65.5" ntn, 1.5" at the fades and straight tapered to 1/2" nocks. 1.5-2" deflex (ya, I know, but I didn't know what I was doin'. ???) and started out with 3.5" reflex. She shows 1.5" string follow after unstringing, but gains it all back after resting a couple of hours. Ya, she's lightweight, I was shooting for 45 lbs. she came in about 30 lbs. at 28", but she's fun to play with! She has 18" power lam of Jatoba, and the riser is built up with maple, natural Boo and the outer lam is "Cumarru", not sure but I think it's Brazillian Teak. ::) Tip overlays are also Cumarru. Arrow shelf is built up leather with Superglue. Tillering was most nerve-racking for me, but I took my time and and made a lightweght shooter out of a bow which was supposed to end up as kindling!. Leather grip is not glued so I can remove it if needed. Stitching is abit messed up, but not bad for a first timer. Finish is Feiblings leather dye with 7 coats of Tung Oil. I really liked this combo, as it was easy to apply and really makes the wood glow! l I think she looks good anyways! Any and all comments are welcome. I can take good or bad...(I might learn something.) Sorry for so many pics. Oh ya....these are my first woodies too!

Very cool. I am thinking of a similar bow. Relex/deflex I sketched up a design today. 62 inches long.

Eastern!!! Dude, that is a nice looking bow! I am impressed, and sorry to be so long getting back to you on this.
What is the tiller on it? (I mean above and below the grip.) Just curious! From the pics, it has a nice shape to it unstrung - in the pic has it been just unstrung or sitting for a while? I would guess that the lesser angle on the reflex was a bit more forgiving during tillering...
I don't think you needed to put in the extra tapered insert in the tips, but I have thought about giving it a try myself. Where I have seen it done most is on recurves - it would certainly stiffen that last section of limb! Do I detect a hint of a hinge in the lower limb where the stiffener ends? (May be just the photo! I don't see it when strung at all.)
I like the shape at the grip, and the way you finished off the grip and the rest, or shelf, is great!
As to the tongue oil, I don't know how water-proof that stuff is. If the wood can absorb moisture from the air it will. You will know it as the bow will slow down and not shoot with the same authority. If so, just dry it out again! (Like I say, I don't know about tongue oil - may not be an issue at all!)
If I were you, I'd be very proud of that bow! To pull this one out of "kindling" is a great feat indeed.
I guess my only question is - when are you building your next one and what will you make it out of?

2chucks2 - what draw length are you going for? A 62 inch longbow is fairly short, and the tillering more demanding to accomplish. Also, I would worry about stack a bit, if you are intending to draw it to any length. To help this, a shorter grip section so that you have max length of limb to work with might help. Glass front and back will help a lot as well! I have a long draw and have found stack on a lot of 66 inch bows, and every longbow less than that in length I've tried so far. I am not trying to put you off of your design, just wondering if you've shot a working longbow of that length without issue before... Shorter bows have been made for years, obviously! Like horse bows and flight bows - but I just thought I'd ask!!!

BT...I don't think it's a hunter's bow. too light! But I hope to finish out my next bow at around 50lb....Hickory backed Jatoba, partially tillered as we speak.
Sorry you missed it BT! Everyone's been very kind with the praise and compliments...might be hard to out do the finish of this one. Time will tell.
SMJ, I'll post answers to your questions tomorrow. Thanks guys!

Legally, we can't hunt with anything lighter than 45lbs

smj, after talking to a few other folks, it seems 64 or 66 might be a better choice and you have said above. I was thinking of one maple tapered lam with a kingwood lam both front and back and then glass both front and back. I dont know what this will work out to in terms of poundage. Do you have a clue?
