I dont have anything against someone who wants to spend their time focusing on a real trophy deer... I know many good people who do just this. The people I know who trophy hunt dont do so for money or fame, they do it for pleasure.
I dont have a problem with these good people.
I have an issue with people who kill deer to make a living and please allow me to elaborate....
What I have seen (past and present) is the fact that trophy hunting is a black eye for hunters as a whole. I saw a post awhile back where a T.V. personality stated that he would gut shoot a deer if that was the only way of getting the shot off.
He explained that it was the process of allowing time to finish off the deer that mattered when speaking of recovery.
To me thats sick
However... I am finding signs that this is becoming the norm. How many shows I have seen over the last two years where a hunter waits to recover. A Full Day!.
It seems (obvious) that the meat is of no concern and what is prized is the horns that can be shown to a televised audience.
There are exceptions to this of course but what I see is the lack of public outcry.
When did this turn into a sport as opposed to a lifestyle?.
When did hunting become the equivalent of a video game?.
It is all so very tasteless IMO... And in the opinion of those who came before me. I never knew (in the past) a hunter that shot in order to recover horns. I knew hunters who were hunting for a deer.
In the 70's, the hunting community took a real hit on the head because of trophy hunters and I see it coming again in spades... because of the current crowd that treats an art as a past time.
Worse... they treat hunting as a way to make a living in a most transparent way that is even distasteful to hunters.
How many (real) hunters I have met that dislike the current crop of "Pro Hunters" I cannot count... But the numbers I am meeting are fewer each year on forums across the United States.
What I am saying is that each year, more and more Newbies are accepting of this "Pro" mentality and many Hunters are starting to accept the "Pro's" tactics and measure of success.
This concerns me.
Fred Bear was a man I knew who (while he did seek out trophy animals) would turn his back to the process and mentality of the current "Pro's"
People like Barry Wensel have also turned away from these kids... Barry Wensel mind you!. This is not someone who turns away from hunting in the course of making a living!.
Barry's latest creation (brothers of the bow) is so far away from what is publicized today (on T.V.) as to scream....STOP!.
(I appreciate that)
Does it bother anyone other than me?.
