I was just putting together some bowfishing arrows and noticed that the AMS safety slide instructions say, "Recommended for arrow speeds of 145 fps or less." The bow I'm setting up shoots around 256 fps....will this be a problem? Are there different slides for different bow speeds, or is it a one size fits all item?

Spiker, BT is right, your average fiberglass fishing arrow is what AMS is speaking of, and they are heavy. Whether you are shooting a recurve or a compound, you generally don't want more than 50 lbs of pull. You can shoot heavier, but you'll blow through a lot of fish and it is a pain to get the string and arrow worked back through them UNLESS you use a tournament knot. Here is a link to a knot pictorial I made last year for the bowfishermen over on HuntingNet.com of a system I use to tie my arrows on with the safety slide. It is very handy: www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1521528&mpage=2

LMAO!!!!! I didn't think it through all the way! I guess I should ask if a 62# bow is too much. That whole weight speed relationship escaped me there for a while....doh!

My Havoctec is set around 62-65#'s. I had it at 73 but it was breaking the safty slide stops out after a while. My recurve is 50#'s and works great too, but for some deep or far shots I am not getting very good penetration. It does work great for the 5-10yd shots on fish a foot or so deep.

I used a 50# compound for years and took shots out to 7 yards in depths of 3 to 4' but deeper than that , I would want more weight.

Yeah, I have a 45 lb curve and a 50 lb Oneida. I like the Oneida because I bank shoot right now (no boat yet) and it reaches out there a lot better. Even on 15-20 yard shots I'm lucky enough to make on carp, it blows right through them at times if they are close to the surface. It seems just about right for gar though, although I'll blow through them on close shots sometimes too.

I don't mind blowing through a fish, I have not found it that hard to shove the arrow back through the fish and I know it won't pull out then
