What a day!. I was 20 feet from the blind that we had set up the night before and I heard a Gobble a couple of hundred yards away. I tossed the diaphragm in and gave a run to him as fast as I could and then jumped in the blind. I am saying that at this point , a few minutes had passed and as I zippered up the door I heard him maybe 50 - 60 yards away. I know he heard that god awful loud zipper because he was right on me at 40 yards....holding just inside of the wood line. He gave one short burst and then I never heard from him again.
That was it for day one and I blew it.
If we had gotten to the blinds a half an hour earlier I am sure that bird would have been in my lap. I dont know how in the heck he made that distance up so fast.

They are somthing else. He isnt going anywhere. Give him another shot and he is toast. Good luck. Man that gobble from close range is a heart stopper isnt it. I love that noise. I have had them hurt my ears!!!

Too bad you couldn't get a shot at him this time but even if he doesn't come back the other one may well let you poke a hole in him.

The last time I hunted turkey, I call and moved, if I didn't got a response after 20-30 min.I covered 60 acres with 100's of acres around that.I drove 4 mi. home walked in the door. The phone was ringing my Son said there were 5 toms below his house sight. I drove back set out my decoys and called with the box call.Got an immanent response.5 toms showed up at the stone wall opening and one took off running full speed. He charged in like his life depended on him winning a race.He won the race and lost his life.24 lbs. And the only one of the 5 to sprint the 175 yds.to the decoys. They had eather come a long way or were slow in following me.The one I took was in an open field with no cover.I have had Jake's come in fast but most mature birds sneak in very slowly.
