Well you guys have convinced me to make a push for bowhunting with traditional equipment. Having no bow thats kinda of tough, not a problem though. I like the idea of harvesting a deer with something I built. I am a LONG way off of that. This is not an educational buildalong alot of people do it to educate others this being my first bow I find it lilkely I will screw up alot of it so by no means do I think I know what I am doing LOL. This is going to be tough for me, I have no wood working experience and my tools are limited. I doubt I will finish by march, I have ski practice everyday until 7:00 except weekends so I dont have much time, bear with me it will take awile.
Now to the actual bow. I am planning on using this buildalong posted below.

My goal is to be able to build better bows but you got to start somewhere . My goal for summer is to build a hickory backed osage or something like that.
To start, here is the board I picked up today. Best grain I could find. Definately is not perfect but I think it will suffice. Your thoughts? Good enough, not good enough? The end with the horizontal grain turns that way about 4 inches from the end. I plan on cutting it off. That leaves me with a 68 inch stave ( don't know if thats correct word). I am aiming for 40 pounds at 27". I doubt I will be close but its wishfull thinking
The bad end, remember I think grain turns bad 4 inches from this end so I am not too worried.
Good grain side, at least my understanding of whats good and bad.
Gross dog hair
The board is slightly warped up and down not side to side. Kinda like a reflex. No pics of the warpage but when set with curve side down the ends are only 5/16 off ground.
More pics of board
Is this board good enough?
Another question, I live in kalamazoo, we have a trad archery expo coming up. Is there anything I should pick up in terms of bowmaking tools and what not?
