All of the focus on small diameter shafts is fine, now that manufacturers are spending millions on advertising this "New" technology..... but back in the 90's everyone hated small diameter shafts it seemed.
I was forever telling people about the advantages of these shafts (on Bowsite) many years back but the old boys would just roll up with their snide remarks and dumb comments. Most people ended up using those shafts they bought for tomato poles by the time they were convinced by the "Pro's" that they were worthless.
While I was promoting the benefits of these small shafts, the reason I was doing that had little to do with the shaft and more to do with the components of those shafts. Back then the outsert was the piece that pulled it all together. The outsert was what gave these shafts amazing penetration. This can be seen today with Victory shafts, which utilize an outsert.
No company claims they can out penetrate a Victory Armor piercing because nobody can... It is impossible without also utilizing an outsert.
Today?.... All the "Pro's" are talking about small diameter shafts as if they are the best thing since the compound bow. ;D
We are dealing with advertising hype as the actual diameter of the standard carbon composite shaft is 6.50mm and this new/old breed is 5.00mm. That's a 15.3% reduction in diameter and nothing that is going to convince me to junk what I have in order to achieve that reduction at a higher cost.
To achieve the best penetration at a reasonable price to performance ratio, all anyone has to do is affix a head to the shaft that carries with it a larger ferrule than the diameter of the shaft it is attached to. The best penetration will go to the smallest ferrule that is larger than the shaft it is attached to. Simple as that.
Keep this in mind if you feel the urge to follow the hype but don't have a lot of cash to throw in the direction of that goal. Penetration is broadhead first and arrow second... Same as it has always been
