The question is as follows.... I have a good friend who used to shoot a longbow back when he was a kid and he really liked it. He hasn't done it since but has wanted to tag along on some of these hunts I have done in the past. Now he hears about this team hunt and he really wants to go I have two choices for bows and alot of thought as to how I should approach this First the bows I have a crossbow which would be very easy to train him in on and I have a recurve which would be harder. He likes the longbow but I don't have one that I am going to let him use I have a 60# recurve (at his draw length) but he is sort of hard headed and the learning curve might be a bit much. So the question remains....do I push the crossbow or hope I can help him to become effective with the recurve over the next 3 months ? Truth of the matter is that he is a great guy and god knows he needs a sport like this that he can share with his son but I need a little insight from others as to how to begin. The fact that this is a preserve hunt is a good thing IMO for his first hunt if he is to go because he will have alot of help if something goes wrong and also alot of help in advancing his learning of the sport. Lets hear it And by the way....you dont have to have a stake in this question in order to have a valuable opinion

I don'tthink there is anyway that someone who hasn't shot a bow in 40 plus years, is going to get proficient enough with traditional equiptment, in 3 months to ethically hunt. Just my opinion.

I can get certain people proficient at 15yrds in 3 months with a recurve. (look at skipmaster ) But it is all about attitude. I do think however that this person may well be the candidate for the crossbow None the less....that's the dilemma Do I encourage him and if he is coming up short then tell him he isn't ready or do I just avoid it all in the first place by suggesting the crossbow?

I would suggest forgetting the April hunt all together and getting him ready for next season.

I would suggest forgetting the April hunt all together and getting him ready for next season. Why?....dont like the crossbow idea? or.... the idea of confrontation with the potential lack of ability after he does put in the time?
