Your right a 400 sounds better. This guy gets rattled and had made many less that stellar shots on lots of game. In the event he hit a big bone, I would rather that he have some weight behind the shot.

as I said, if you want I have some axis 300's (same spine as cx400) that you can have. it's up to you but I don't think they can be beat for penetration.

I would be more than happy to try them. I (more than he) really want to make sure he is using the best posible setup for max penetration.
