Anyone have any tips for my upcoming Elk hunt? I'm headed to MT in less than 2 weeks. Should be there for some rutting action. I have an either sex tag, so I'll be happy to fill it with a cow or bull. I am going to be using my Katera XL with NAP Nightmares. I have it dialed in to fist sized groups at 80yds and should still be pushing about 70#KE at that range. Anything else I should be thinking about?

is this a doi hunt or guided? Either way... plan on a lot of hiking (get in the best aerobic shape you can). Use good quality bino's 10X42 is my preference (i have windriver, but ... as long as they are good your set) Real good boots - nothing cramps your style like hiking with wet feet. My personal favorite are Kenetrek mountain hikers - $300 but worth every single penny! Will check back in the morning .. but am leaving on a antelope hunt late AM.

Enjoy the hunt and dont be afraid to call. I have been to Montana twice and had chances at nice bulls both times. Second time out there I called a 6x6 into my buddy 3 different times and he never managed to get a good shot angle. It was incredible!!!!
Im headed to New Mexico myself on Friday for a week. I dont have a tag but a friend of mine does. Im carrying the calls, the digital camera, and the video camera. I cant wait!!! Having a bull on you bugling is the best rush there is. NOTHING has come close.......

Thanks guys. I was lucky enough to be invited out and tag alone with a few friends who live there. I think I should be prett set on gear and I'm in decent shape. I have no problem hiking miles here at home and last year the elevation didn't bother me until 10,000 feet and that wasnt too bad. I picked up a Hoochie Mama call and I'm sure they have the rest covered. My shooting is good, my camera and video camera are both coming.....I'm stoked. Not to mention I have an either sex deer tag, so I might get a chance at a nice buck, hopefully a Muley!
Have fun on your trip donk, you should have a blast

Greg,
Im sure your buddies will help fill you in. You can get away with way more movement on elk than the whitetail your used to hunting. If they spot you sometimes they will look right through you as long as you dont move. If they smell you though the gig is up and they will take off for the next county. I will worn you now though if you get into elk, and bulls that are bugling your going to be addicted..........
