For those of you who have taken a bear with a bow, which broadhead did you use, and what do you recommend?

I've hunted Bear but back then there wasn't the broadheads that there are today. In general, some of the best heads have either come and gone, are to expensive or just plain 'ol gone It's best to place the shot tight behind the shoulder and center mass IMO...so the chance of error to the scapula/foreleg is greater and therefore would dictate a superior head in both blade and ferrule construction. Bear do not have the constitution of deer...in fact...probably not nearly as tough But as far as a trackable animal, they are much tougher The fact that they will hole up and attack the tracker when wounded, combined with the fact that they carry thick coats (which suck up blood) makes matters potentially worse. Considering these two things....the bowhunter would be best served with a head that would carry a minimal cut area as well as a maximum cut area. On the face of it, this would point to heads such as the Aftershock or Atom. The issue with the Aftershock is the fact that the head will jam in hard material...such as bone. The Atom would not have these issues at all...but in light of the fact that I blew the cut rings off not just one of these heads....I would personally not advise these heads either. That being said...break away broadheads have been used (purposefully) for decades. So they (IMO) could remain considered. For myself....I would go Spitfire to resolve blood and Stinger for penetration....but neither will be best for both issues Logically (the only way I operate) the design that would be dictated by circumstance would be a single blade head with a large cutting area...such as the silver flame.

I'm getting some nice reports on other sites of people using the Slicktrick Mag 100 gr. Pics are showing good wounds, and reports are that they are leaving excellent bloodtrails.

I killed my bear with a spitfire and he never made it 50 yds. My buddy killed two both in the 300 lb range with pretty muck the same results.

On Archers Choice, they have used the Spitfire and this past year I believe the HellRazor.
