yesterday, i headed down to Hinton, Alberta for aElk bowhunt with a buddy of mine. it was hot and sunny in the afternoon for the 2.5-3 hours drive, then, 20 minutes away from hinton......storm clouds over the mountain. got to his place, loaded up, geared up, and man'd up. We were on our way into the bush. then the rain started, then the lightning, then the hail came down so bad it looked like it snowed.
since the elk wouldnt be moving, we searched the area for future fishing areas. and with about 1.5 hours of shooting light left, the rain stopped. so we raced over to where he had seen a big 6x6 with ivory tips in the morning. setr up for calling, i flipped the coin for shooter. knocked an arrow and got ready.
started with cow calls and elk started to chuckle in the distance, let out a bugle and got a return.
to make a long story short, that big 6x6 snuck up behind us only to 70 yards. and even though it was to far for a shot , the trees were in the way. he didnt even make a sound, we were entertaining the other elk that were answering.
it was a weird and exciting day, and i am headed out there again next friday, to sunday, in hopes of tagging a big bull elk, or cow elk, and hopefully a couple does for the contest.
we saw over 5 whitetail bucks today, and even more does, but that was just from driving around looking at creeks to fish later in the fall for brown trout.

All right! Last year we had a bull come up behind Kevin to about 15 yards, and then stand there and watch him. Never made a sound until Kevin went to change up calls. Soon as Kevin moved, the bull went right over an 8 foot high brush pile! When he hit the ground, you could really feel the thump! Of course, never saw him again. Kevin saw him as he was in the air... and said "His $$$ was this wide!" while holding his hands as far apart as possible. Fun stuff - good luck on the next go 'round! And post some pics!
