dammit!
I've sat stands for over a month now, without seeing anything except a group of does at the beginning of Southern Zone season.
Yesterday morning I was sitting a stand that I had hung, that looked promising, but so far had produced zip.
Around 8am I stood up in my stand, turned around, and looked into the swamp behind me.
I saw, way in the distance, what appeared to be a large "bush" moving in the wind, yet...none of the other foliage was moving?
It started to get closer, and I realized that they were antlers!
This is the biggest buck I've ever seen in the woods. It rivals the Westchester deer that I've seen hunting with skip.
I had plenty of time to turn right, with my bow at the ready. He was making his way through a thick bramble, and the side to side movement of his rack was him clearing the way through the thicket...crazy.
I picked an opening at 25 yds, came to full draw, and as he entered it, I released the arrow.
The first thing that startled me was that I had forgotten about the lighted nock, and was impressed to see the laser beam it produced in the shaded woods.
The second startling event was watching the arrow "tick" an unseen branch within a foot of the perfect shot, deflect into a sapling next to it, and watching my nock fly to the left, while my fletching flew to the right.
I can only imagine what happened to the rest of the arrow.
The deer bounced twice out of range, looked around, and decided he didn't like what just happened.
He then trotted off.
Not the best ending to a story...it will haunt my dreams for a long time....
