I thought I would try to make a deke cover out of my jake I killed this year.
I have a turkey skinz from A-Way Outdoors but I wanted to see if putting one on my jake deke would make a difference.
This is my first try so it may need some tweaking before it is finished, I will try this one out before I do anymore.
It will add me taking one more thing in the woods with me but it will be worth it if it works.
It rolls up really nice and doesn't weigh anything so it may be an added feature for my deke.
I may try to make a fan for it so it looks like it is strutting but I haven't figured out how I want to make it.
I would like to say first off that I have never tried anything like this before so persevering the skin of the turkey was something I read about on the net so time will tell if it holds up.
How I made it......
Step one:
Kill a turkey and cut the wings off close to the body or take your buddies when he/she is not looking.
Step two:
De-bone and get all the meat and loose skin off the wing hide.
Sorry no pics but all the feathers stay with the hide.
Step three:
Pickle the skin.
You need non-iodized salt and borax.
After the skin has all the meat off take the salt and pour it on the skin and rub it in all the areas.
I put the salt on till it was about a 1/4" thick on the skin.
Wait at least 12 hrs then take the salt off and reapply another layer.
The salt pulls all the moisture out of the skin and preserves it.
I then washed off all the salt with a wet sponge then applied the borax to about a 1/4" think and let it sit for three days.
They say the borax neutralizes the salt and helps preserve the skin.
Then remove all the borax and your skin is done.
Step four:
You need something to put you skin and feathers on.
Took an old foam deke and cut the head and tail off and split it in half keeping the upper part together.
Step five:
Attaching the skin, I used fletching glue from easton ( almost like supper glue), needle and thread, rubberized glue.
The needle and thread I used just to hold the skin to the deke while the glue was setting up.
In the places were the skin wouldn't bend I put the fletching glue and were the skin may give I put the rubberized glue so to allow movement.
Step six:
Attaching straps to hold the skin on the deke.
I used velcro for the straps and attached them with staples and the easton glue.
Step seven:
Field testing, time to go hunting.
Pics of skin.
These are the type of old deke that I cut up and used, you only need one.
Finished skin off the deke
