Shot this young boar yesterday evening. Distance was 28 yards with a 376 gr arrow at 282 fps. I shot him with the same Nightmare broadhead I did the accuracy test with. I shot it 131 times for the test and have shot it at least 20 times since. All were into a Rinehart broadhead target. It was still about as sharp as a Montec out of the package. It was a clean pass through that went a good 10 yards on the other side of the hog. I used the new Firenock which worked just as advertised.
I had very poor light and would not have been able to shoot him except for his light color and my sight has a tritium pin on it. There were 2 other boars with him, one of them a sure enough daddy. He was actually closer to me than the one I shot but he was black, I couldn’t tell the front from the back and I didn’t want to just annoy him. Annoyed 300 lbs boars are bad for ruining perfectly good underwear.
I thought the hit was perfect but as the hogs scrambled back into the thicket, I lost track of which direction my piggy went. I went to my arrow and found lots of blood. I tracked him into the thicket about 25 yards or so when the big boar started popping his teeth at me and huffing. He was about 20 yards away. I decided that discretion was the better part of valor and crawled my behind out of there. I went back this morning with my camera and resumed the blood trail. Of course the batteries in my camera were dead. So I left it on my 4 wheeler and went on to recover the hog. The blood trail was great. Even after 12 hours it was still impressive. The hog was right in the area where old big boy started cussin at me last night.
I got him to the house and tended to him, then went back with fresh batteries and took some blood trail pics. I also bumped into a big sow and her crew. These 2 came at me and I thought I was going to have to defend myself.
You can see the psycho look in that ones eyes. I was ready to rumble (I’m very brave when the hogs weight about a pound or so, even if I am outnumbered) when the sow came back. Between a large sow and her little pigs is not a good place to be, especially when you are armed only with a camera. I backwalk out of there and gave them time for a reunion and to complete their travel plans. While people worry about boars, a sow is the only hog to every have tasted me.
I’ll post the pics in the bloodtrail section.
