This past season was kinda slow so I decided after Christmas to take a little trip over to Tennessee and chase some fallow deer. Snow had dumped on us so I was alittle worried about being able to get there but the roads where clear and we made it ther ein due time. By that afternoon I was sitting on a stand enjoying nature.
A few minutes later I heard a sound to my left and a glance told me it was an elk. Wow!! I had never seen on of these when I was hunting so this was a wonderful treat. The was like Santa Claus and made not a peep as she glided through the trees. A few mintes later I catch motion in the same area. This time it was a 5X5 bull making his way toward me. Buck fear started to set in even though I knew I wasnt going to take a shot. He looked to be only about 2 or 3 years old and stopped several times to tempt me. Eventually he made it down wind of me and cauth my scent sending him sprawling over the hill.
Again a few minutes later a huge cow started making her way down the same trail the bull had taken. She stopped to glare at me for a few. Sudden I caught movement in front of me and noticed a band of fallow deer heading my way. They were lead by a white doe followed by a young chocolate buck, then a white buck and several other does and buttons. The white buck seemd to be slightly larger than the chocolate one. I quickly reached for the range finder and marked the spot I guessed they would cross. The doe made to the opening and crossed exactly where I had hoped. As she was nearing the edge o fteh opening she stopped and took noticed of me. Ooopps The jig could be up. Luckily the Chocolate buck continue to follow the doe closely followed by the white one.
Worried the doe would spook once the chocolate buck was clear of the white one I drew and settled the pin on the shoudler of the white stag. I touche dteh release sending a arrow screaming toward the deer a meer 28 yards away. I heard the distinctive sound of the blades opening a few seconds later than the buck worlded around and ran the direction he had came from. The Choclate buck sprinted across the opening followed closely by the doe.
I was quickly reminded of the cow as I stood to look for the fallow buck. She wasnt so quiet leaving as she was coming in. ;D
I quickly recruited help to follow the blood trail in the snow. Eighty yards later the search ended. I had my first fallow.
