I have figured out my kinetic energy, but without knowing the kinetic energy required it is useless. What is commonly accepted as the minimum required for deer, and for moose? Also is there a formula to know the down range energy. I am shooting a Desert Stryker, it shoots a 425gr bolt at 350ft/sec, but I am shooting a 487gr bolt for moose hunting. Thanks for any help.

If your getting 350 fps with a 425 gr arrow, you have all the enery required to kill any animal on the planet.

It is based on the broadhead. If you were hunting cape Buffalo with a 2.5" expandable....you'd be up the creek There is a thread here which addresses this issue and I will try and post it for you.

I have checked that link, and it does give the kinetic energy but it does'nt tell me the required amount of energy I need to hit a moose with, or the energy down range.

Down range is there if you look for the max rating for the head diameter and K.E. I.E. : 60#K.E. @ 45yrds. w/ 1 1/8" head
Keep in mind that these are numbers which assure you of penetration. In reality, these numbers listed will more than smoke anything in north America when speaking area's which comprise only ribs.
When moving to an African scale.....these rules of thumb are on the minimum side.

Yes it is a crossbow. It's a Desert Stryker by Bowtech. So you guys seem quite comfortable at 45yds? How about 50yds?

In the shoulder?....you'd get one lung...but thats not a situation I would want. Bear in mind that I am always looking at things from a worst case scenario and therefore I am looking at the shoulder. You never know Anyway....that would suck! ;D Through the lungs while centering a rib?.....yes....I would say that 50 is likely doable. Keep in mind though....what if you don't hit the lungs?.....can you retrieve a moose that is a 1/4 mile from where you shot it?. A moose is pretty darn fragile when hit well and generally fold fairly quick (when they are not rutted up) but with one lung, they will be able to travel a far distance.
