OK, now my questions are:
1. If it were mechanically possible and physically possible to shoot a 500 grain arrow as fast as you wanted, how fast would be satisfactory? 300 fps 400 fps 500 fps 600 fps 700 fps
fill in the blank_________
2. Is there are point where arrow speed becomes “unethical”?

As I see it there is no such thing as to fast. With speed you get flat flight and with that you get to use 1 pin for farther out shots.
The problem with archery equipment is if those speeds was possible you would have to have a stiffer spined arrow and many more things would need to be done in order to be accurate with your shot placement. Speed is nothing if you can’t hit what your aiming at.
For argument sake lets say speed is the only factor here, with speed comes flat fight. With speed comes more kinetic energy giving you better penetration. With better penetration those bad shot placements have a better chance of killing the animal quicker and you know DEAD IS DEAD no matter how fast the arrow is going.
For arrow speed to be unethical I would go the other way with the speed and say at what speed does an arrow become unethical for deer that wont allow you proper penetration.
With that said you need to factor in the BH also be used.
I gave my shot at answering your question and others here can give a lot more info.

The logical answer is as fast as you can accurately shoot. That covers both answers. It does no good to go mach 2 if you cant hit anything. To expand on ethics the speed should be fast enough so that the arrow lethally penetrates the game you are hunting.

IMO You only need as much speed as is needed as stated to pass through the target. It might limit your shooting range to under 25-35 yards but I still feel as a limited speed shooter putting the proper B/H in the proper spot is the most important thing.

Is there are point where arrow speed becomes “unethical”? Dude, don't even think of attaching the "ethical" moniker to speed. Speed is King. Think of the many advantages. 1. Short draw archers can now attain the speed, and therefore the KE that long draw archers have had for years. 2. Bows can now be turned down to 50# - 60#, and allow younger, smaller, woman, etc, the same advantage as their larger counterparts. 3. You will gain yardage by having less arrow drop, making yardage estimation less of a factor. 4. You can shoot heavier arrows if you want, and get insane KE 5. You can shoot light arrows, and get insane KE. 6. Deer have less chance to jump the string. 7. I now have a bow that shoots a 335gr arrow @ 349fps for 90+ KE! Oh I see, you don't think it's fair to the deer? Me neither! ;D

I'm no engineer or anything but I think that limit to how fast is to fast would be a combination of arrow flight ... stable flight that is at increased speeds, and the components of the bows ... what kind of stresses is a bow shooting lets say 450FPS under? Lowering the letoff might allow such speeds to become possible ... but like I said, no engineer. As for how fast is to fast? I can't see the arrow when I send it on its way now ... so maybe a little faster! lol
