For the last year and a half I've purposely seriously reduced my time on hunting boards and watching hunting shows out of frustration and high blood pressure. It pained me because I use them to stay abreast of new equipment, but wading through all the CRAP to get to that was just irritating the hell out of me. The know it all's and know nothings, the endless fist pumping endzone dances on the stand, the unrealistic editing...the lies in the name of the almighty $. This board is, and has been, my only bastion of grounding. So, yesterday, I reconfigured my satellite tv network package and discovered a couple of new outdoors channels. I thought, lets see what they are doing now. It's either gotten worse, or I'm just more sensitive to it since I've been away. Or, maybe I'm turning into an old curmudgeon. We need this exposure to maintain numbers of hunters/outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen interested, but it just seems the message of conservation, preservation and heritage has taken a back seat...or is being dragged along in the utility trailer. Thanks for existing Archers Edge.

Thanks for existing Archers Edge. I hear you snood. Unfortunately, it's near impossible to air hunting shows without sponsors, and gimmicks to attract customers....not members. They couldn't care less about adding to our ranks, just about selling more product to whomever will buy it. My suggestion to you, is to post more of your knowledge about bird hunting, as I can tell you do a lot of, so we can learn more about it. I feel the same way as you about this board. The best we can do is share our experiences with others, and hope they do the same so we can all learn together. I'm an equipment junkie, so I have to scan the boards regularly to keep abreast of the new products....got to have them...lol

When the focus became more on scores than time in the field with family and friends I saw a dramatic change in attitudes. I teach Hunter Ed here and start the classes off with this statement: "Hunting is not a sport, football, basketball, baseball, those are sports. Nothing dies in a sport. Hunting is a tradition that is handed down through the generations". Don't know that it makes a difference, but it sets the tone for how the couple teams I work with teach our classes. And I tell the kids that most of what they see on tv is not how their hunts will be, they are going to have to put in some time, effort and sweat. That they don't have to make meat to have a successful hunt, but when they do it will make the hunt better. I like to think we have a good crop of youngsters coming out of our classes.

If your satellite provider is direct TV, and you get the Pursuit Network, check out PassThru TV. These are a bunch of local North East guys that are trying really hard to make it. They want ot show your everyday hunter type situations. They hunt mostly public land, in Mass, CT, and NY. They aren't shooting monsters, but they are in the situations most of us are in. They do their homework, and killed quite a few deer and turkey on camera in 2009. This is a great group of guys that I met last year at the Rhinehart 100. They were camped next to us, and I walked over with a crock pot of chili. Instant friendship! I have kept in touch with them online, and they have offered me multiple times a treestand and a camera man to hunt with them, unfortunately, I couldn't make it happen. Hopefully in 2010. I spent a couple hours with them at the Springfield outdoor show. Talking hunting, and bows, and drinking beer "backstage" These guys are just like you , me and the rest of us. Josh has dumped his life savings into making this work, and I think he has it going in the right direction. Give them a look... you can see their first TV episode here.... www.huntvids.com/video/1453/passthrutv-season-1-episode-1And here is a website... www.passthruoutdoors.com/
