We knew that there was a spikehorn on the property with a broken rear leg. It was important to put him down as it looked like he was in a bit of pain, even though he was getting around pretty good. The problem was getting a shot at him. I decided to put the Butternut in a location where we had seen him before, in a really thick swamp that had almost zero shots available. It was important to place the set right in one of the few shooting lanes from the stand. At first light I saw him come out of the underbrush sniffing the air, maybe for a doe? No! He had the Butternut in his nostrils, and it drew him right into the lane that I had planned the shot. Man, I love it when a plan comes together. Once again, the Nap Nightmare did it's job, and this Spiker was another on the roster for this Spiker this year. What a season! I can't even imagine how this guy was getting around on that bum leg. They are tough as nails, no doubt about it.
