For those of you who are interested, here is an easy way to splice feathers. You'll have to forgive me for the picture size, I tried to resize them, and it didn't work.
First, you will need the two pieces you want to splice, a sharp razor knife, a fletching clamp (preferably straight) some 220 sandpaper, and some feather adhesive (Fletch-Tite, Duco, Ect..)
First, lay the piece you wish to splice on the other feather, and mark where they will meet.
Using the razor knife, cut the feather at the quill, cutting out the area you marked off. Be careful not to cut through the quill, just strip it.
Carefully use the razor knife to scrape any feather scraps off the quill, so you have a nice flat surface. Next, put the small piece you are splicing into the feather clamp.
Lightly sand the base of this piece so that the quill is very thin...again, be careful not to go through the quill, just get it as thin as possible.
Once this is done, put a small bead of glue along the quillof the smaller piece, and line it up on the quill of the feather you stripped. PLace it on the clamp as one feather, the use a table to apply pressure tho the whole joint (Make sure everything is lined up properly beofre applying pressure!!!!)
Hold for about 20-30 seconds, and it should be safe to remove the feather from the clamp...and here it is when finished...
After a few moreminutes of drying time, it is safe to chop the feather if you wish...here is my shield cut feather...
And the finished product...
I hope that was easy enough for everyone to understand....let me know if you have any questions....
