I talked to Byron Ferguson at the Ohio Deer and Turkey Expo about trad bows. He stated to me that a long bow is allot more forgiving than a recurve. He said that if a recurve was torqued to far when pulling the string back that some are so weak at the tip that the string can come off the bow while at full draw. Byron Ferguson all so said that a long bow has more benefits than a recurve as it comes to being more forgiving at the shot which in turn makes it more accurate of a bow to shoot. Anyone I have seen shooting a trad bow it has been a recurve. I don't know if it is because it looks better or because it is shorter from tip to tip. I ask this because I am seriously thinking about getting some trad gear but it will take some time. So considering I am new to this should I stick to what Byron Ferguson told me about the long bow or is a recurve just fine to learn on . Any help would be appreciated. I am looking at getting a bow with a 29" draw 50# to start that should be good considering I shoot 29" draw @ 71# with my compound. Am I correct in my thinking.

Not all longbows or recurves are created equal and a lot of how well you shoot a bow is personal preference. I shoot both but am partial to longbows and shoot them a bit better than recurves. In general a longer bow tip to tip will be more forgiving, but I shoot my 58" shrew great. You can find long, longbows and short recurves or vice versa. So much is just personal preference. My advise would be to shoot a few different bows and see what you like. some stores have bows you can try or see if there are any trad events or gatherings in your area and shoot a few there. In general you will have a slightly shorter draw length with trad than with compound and 50#'s is about the max i would start with. i shoot 80-90#'s with compunds and 55#'s was a bit too much to start with in a recurve, 50#'s was much better

I think most recurve shooters choose them because of the looks, the grip and the speed... not in any particular order by the way.....and longbows for the smoothness, the quiet shot, and the history, but I do agree with Mr. Krause.. not all longbows and recurves are the same....and then consider the hybrids which take the best of each genre and put it in one bow, and you then have a heck of a choice to make....... shoot as many as you can and choose the one that you just cannot quit thinking about.

Last year I picked up a recurve again after 28 years and now I am wanting to get a longbow I like the feel and smopthnes of them. Like Greg said see if you can find an event for Trad bows in you area and go shoot a bunch of them and see what you like. There is an event in TN this weekend I did not see any events in Ohio tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=97;t=000263;p=1

Good advice about going to a traditional event and try some different bows. If you look around you can pickup some pretty good deals on traditional bows. I started with an old bear 43# bear recurve that I got off craigs list for $50. Since then I have picked up another recurve and had a Toelke Whip custom longbow built. Love the Whip.

For me, I haven't found the longbow that I can shoot as accurately as a recurve....across the board. I have tried very good models of both and it is always the same. I like the feel of a longbow better but (for me) there is no contest as to accuracy.

Thanks for your input and it may be some time but I am looking to get one in the future. Ready to amp up my addiction with trad gear.
