2 vote option on this poll. Lets keep in mind that some are better than others and different regions require different shot distances. This isn't designed to be a hero poll This is meant to find some honest answers that may point to what common means Feel free to elaborate on your equipment and why your shots average what they do

I'd say my high average is 25 yards. 25 has always been my comfort zone and also about where I start losing my ability to see that differences between those distances that become critical It was for this reason alone that I started chasing speed, in order to eliminate errors based on yardage estimation errors. With that said....I have found that in the big picture, there have been very few times where I have needed to be flat past 25 yards when hunting a tree stand. In my experience, 25 is the area where a deer rarely See's the draw and is going to be at anyway, if it is coming in at all. I dont know why that is....it's just what it has been over the years.

When I am hunting without a bait pile my shots always seem to be between 25-35 yards. when I am hunting my bait pile I always put them at 15 yards and have a climbing tree down wind of the corn and the trails leading to it.

If I do a quick average in my mind of all my shots, I'd have to say 23.64 yards. ;D ;D ;D...."about".... ;D I would have to agree, and say 20 - 25 yds. I'm prepared for a longer shot, but shooting lanes in the woods usually dictate the distance...

Crossbows are sighted in at 20 yards and that is their most effective shooting range, also they are not effective (sound) beyond 25 yards.
I have not seen may deer this years so the question is rather mute ;D.

Everything I have shot has been under 25 yards. My longest was 36 yards...I'll practice a tad further, but never had to take a longer shot in the woods.

Big difference between the tree stand hunters and ground hunters in terms of distance Now...the question begs to ask if the limbs (obstructions) are the #1 reason for the limited distance of shots or if it is more by design. (I assume design)

My distance is usually always dictated by tree limb obstruction. You can clear shooting lanes, but it's those trees that are about 15 yds away that have those branches that are tough to get at. And usually they are in layers. I've ground hunted for years, and it was always easier to create longer lanes on the ground. Back then, 25-40 was a common distance. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that a deer can scent you a lot better when your on the ground, and it thinks that it's skirting you by creating more distance between you. (Like rifle hunting). I'm so addicted to tree hunting now..I can smell that deer as it passes by within 15 yds..
