I want some opinions on scoring a leg hit on a 3D target. After the shoot today, Jen and I stopped for ice cream. While we were there, 2 guys from our club, Jack, and Bert, and one of their friend showed up. We got BS'ing while we waited in line, and Jen mentioned that she missed winning the womens division by 4 points, and that she had a goose egg, that was a leg hit. All 3 of the guys we were talking to said that a leg hit isn't a zero, that they call it a nickel. Any part of the animal is a nickel. I was taught, that a leg hit, below the bodyline, was a zero, and that is the way I have been scoring it since I started shooting.
Here is the I.B.O. definition on scoring...
a. Scores will be tabulated as follows: i. 11 points - 11 ring or “X” ring centered inside the 10 ring ii. 10 points - 10 ring or heart iii. 8 points - Vital iv. 5 points - Body v. 0 points - Miss or arrow not touching body color
The way I read the IBO rules, is that a leg hit is a 5, being that it is a body colored portion of the deer
How does everyone else score???

Leg hit below the body line is a zero. Each club may have different rules that apply but IBO states that below the body line is a zero. You guys played it honorably .... you can live with that

actually Kris...I'm ok with the body line call...being a hunter...right now Jen isn't...lol.
IBO doesn't mention the bodyline anywhere in their scoring definitions. I copied what I posted straight from the IBO website. And it calls a 0 a miss, or "non body colored area". Bodyline isn't mentioned.

The last time I actually spoke with anyone from IBO (which was year before last ) , there were so many rule changes from years past (when I used to do it) that the question came up. This was what I was told straight from the guy running the shoot so I took it to mean that a non hit was one that was not within the body line because there are no vitals below the body line. IBO was set up to follow a hunting format so this just made sense to me.

I posted this on 7 forums, and the consensus, by a long, long shot is an arrow in the target is a 5. IBO, ASA, and even the CAA rulebook, which was the sanctioning body for the shoot, clearly calls a leg a 5. I feel like crap that I cost Jen a 1st place in the state championship tournament.

That sucks but I would have made the same call. How is she taking it? .... alright hopefully. Look at it this way .... this is super good considering her time in the sport Congratulations Jen
