I was tuning the recurve tonight and yesterday and it occurred to me that I have never seen a thread or comment made as how to tune arrows to the bow.
I know it isn't common practice because someone would have brought it up ;D
Anyway....
I went to a heavy shaft to get my trajectory down to the limit of the bows efficiency curve (another topic for another time )and therefore the tune went out the window from where it had been.
Now... alot of people spend way to much time on spine charts trying to buy the perfect arrow.
It is hard to do.... if not impossible for the Novice.
IMO ... it is easier to tune a stiff arrow by adjusting head weight and cutting the shaft overly long to start.
For example....
These shafts of mine were about 15# over spined for the draw weight and length I shoot , so I started at 2" over my standard length.
With the 100 grain field points , these shafts were still too stiff and so I went to 125 which was an improvement but still not enough.
Finally I got what I was looking for at 150grns.
But....
Now I was under spined
So?....I cut an inch off and wha la!.....perfect!
I generally approach any project like this but never hear of anyone else doing it
I have on the other hand seen alot of threads concerning people who have a dozen arrows which wont fly correctly out of their set up
Next time (especially you trad newbies) get arrows that are spined slightly over what the chart says and then build that arrow down to your bow.
You can always build an arrow down but it is nearly impossible to build it up
