I've always felt that my Vulcan was a little loud on the shot, but didn't mind that it "Announced" it's presence.
After reading threads about replacing the Vulcan, and Katera OEM suppressors, and hearing how much better they were, I decided to give it a shot. I'm still under 20 bucks in, so it's a pretty cool experiment.
The catch is that Hoyt uses a 5/16" "blind" hole, as opposed to the standard 3/8" "threaded" hole that most of the others use.
So I got a length of 5/16" x 36" steel rod at Lowe's for $2.50. I have a bunch of stoppers.
I shrink wrapped some tubing over the steel to increase the diameter to accept the rubber stopper.
I also ordered some aluminum rod for 12 bucks delivered, for a permanent installation.
Here's the pics of the different setups that I used:
First, the straight rod, with an STS bumper. Notice how the bumper is offset due to the way the string lines up with the riser.
Next I bent a rod to get the bumper centered on the string :
Now here's the thing. As I shot each setup, the only one that I felt was better was the straight rod offset with the STS bumper. But, when I had my wife listen as I shot, she felt that the curved rod, with the STS bumper was the best.
So....I set up a laptop with a microphone..a good one...and took some digital recordings of them with the target out at 35 yds, so you won't hear the arrow hit.
So, as you listen to this, the order is:
1. Straight rod with an STS bumper
2. Straight rod with a String Tamer Bumper
3. Curved rod with an STS bumper
4. Curved rod with a String Tamer bumper
5. OEM Suppressor
Check this out: (Make sure to hit the full screen function).
Can anybody tell the difference?
