My first deer after retiring and returning to bow hunting was a kidney shot. Ghost So how did that happen anyway? Kidney shot story When I retired I decided to return to bow hunting. Before this time I had only hunted on the ground so it was a new experience to sit in a tree and let the deer come to me. At first I had trouble being stealthy and I kept spooking the deer (yes they do look up). ;D After two years with no deer I decided to spend October sitting in my tree stand with a my hunting equipment but with no plans to shoot. I would experiment and see what I was doing that spooked all the deer that got with in shooting range. After six weeks of this I was sit along a corn field and a nice eight point entered the field and headed for my stand. It was time to put my learned behavior to the test and harvest a deer. I was shooting a 55lb Martin set at 45lb. I had trouble tuning this bow to group BH but thought I had it fixed. The deer was between 15 and 20 yards walking very slow. I was shooting a slow bow and thought that if I aimed just in front of the shoulder I would hit the lungs. After the shot the deer ran past with a blood wash covering the entire lumbar region so I knew the hit was to far back. Returned home and called a neighbor and we went looking for the deer. We had blood a blind person could follow and when the trail went into the biggest multiflora rose bush I have ever seen we split to go around and he called out that he found the deer. While field dressing my friend said you have a once in a life time miracle shot. The intestines do not quite fill the body cavity, there is a very small fat filled space between them and the bottom of the back bone. This space contains the kidneys and major blood vessels. My arrow went between the two kidneys cutting the two renal arteries and the major body artery and vein. This was the first deer I killed with a bow. Ghost

The bow was not the best, I never could tune it to tight group broad heads. I replaced it with a Browning. I only hunt with a crossbow because this old body is rapidly wearing out. ;D Better to be out in the woods than sitting at home sulking.

I guess I had bow hunted for two years before I got my first shot opportunity. I was 15' up in a tree that I could see into a draw. It was about 4:00 In the afternoon when I saw 6 deer coming thru the woods. I had deer going on both sides of the tree all around me. 4 of them got by before I could get one of them to stop by making a bleat call with my mouth. I drew and let fly a feather fletched XX78 2213 with a 100gr. Thunder Head from my reflex bow. the shot was 15 yards. I watched as the deer ran about 30 yards, turned and ran back about 20 yards and fell over dead. I have never seen so much blood from one deer in all my life. It was a heart shot. I was lucky, I really had no idea where I had aimed. I think I saw hair and pulled the trigger on the release. After that, I was watching a hunting show, can't even remember who it was. But I remember the guy saying when you aim at a deer with a bow, pick a hair to aim at. Ever since then, when I get a shot opportunity I say to myself, PICK A HAIR. It has worked for me ever since. I know there are lots of places you can hit a deer and kill it, a lot of bad shots, meaning we hit the deer somewhere we weren't aiming. It happens if you bow hunt long enough. Heck you even see some of the so call pro's on TV make some bad shots. I'm sure I have seen some hit high and far back that may have been Kidney shots now that I know were they are located. But I would say a Kidney shot would be a bad shot that turned out good.
