Well the flowers are coming up and it is time to get back to the garden, so it is also time to start working on the crossbow. I have about 86# kinetic energy, more than enough for white-tail deer but I would like more stability and accuracy without sacrificing arrow flight. I mostly hunt in the woods where there is always that stray branch that gets missed while trimming so I do not want to increase the arrow arch (a problem with crossbows). The second project will be to build system to dampen down string vibration and hopefuly resulting in less noise. Ghost

The noise reduction (if successful) will be great insight for those in the future Looking forward to it because if it is significant , I might try it and see how it works on mine.

Can't recall which bow ya got, Ghost, but if by any chance it's an Excal, there's a guy in Canada making custom strings for them that do a good job of quieting them down some. His screen name is "Boo" on Excal forum. He serves cat whiskers on Flemish [only will stay on them] style. Along w/ an STS system, there's a real noticeable difference. I only lost 8 fps w/ his string over FFF. Good Luck!

I am interested an STS sytem that I could buy but I like to build things. I have assembled almost every thing but am still looking for rubber stops. Ghost

Up date on the STS project for my Excal crossbow. I build the base of the string damping system out of Osage Orange wood and the rubber out of chem lab rubber stoppers. I shot the crossbow both with and without the STS and have decided that there is no reduction in noise. There is usually a twang sound that is eliminated when the STS is installed. I had my wife listen to the bow at 10 yards and 20 yards and she says there is a change in the quality of the noise but little or no noise reduction. I think I will leave the system on the bow in hopes that it would dampen string vibration on a dry fire and reduce the chance of damage to the crossbow. Pic of STS mounted on bow. Pics of one Osage base and rubber stopper. Ghost

It's certainly looking good and it's too bad it didn't work out as you were expecting. But as you said....it has worth none the less.

Ghost; from one tweaker to another, lol, nice job! I have a hard time believing it doesn't make a major reduction in noise. The rubber stops on my STS are fairly soft and it appears they are adjusted [by Boo] to be about a string thickness toward trigger when string is at rest, IOW, one thickness past just touching. Have you tried bringing yours out a little more? Just curious.

As you said, it's all about tweaking. I improved the stop mount and will look for softer rubber. I will try a bigger space from the string. Ghost
