It looks to me that two of three deer are looking right @ you from 40rds away. The deer in the back does not look "relaxed" he has his ears pinned back. If they separate, if you have a clear shot @ one, you'd be shooting @ ALERT deer from FORTY YDS..... sorry, not my cup of tea Deer hunting, not deer shooting

Good observation Votto. The laid back ears could mean one of two things at the moment of the shot and that is that it bolts out of there or it doesn't due to the distance between the sound and the deer.
I would allow more room for chance at this range than at 25 yards but this is just an observation for my part.

Good points on all levels....My choice is not there either. I vote to let the rear deer clear.....then slam the center buck. 40yds is point blank as far as I'm concerned, just as much chance of a miss at 20. Oh really! come shoot 3D with us some day ;D

Oh really! come shoot 3D with us some day ;D Dude...40 is has been my minimum all summer..with 125 the max...let's talk about hunter frame of mind as opposed to actual skill level.... Well skill level first....I took the Range high score at the Techno hunt with BT and jamaltwy...then 3rd with Skips league...I think that I have the shooting part somewhat accomplished.. Back to frame of mind. Confidence is key...if you know that you can make the shot, you will make the shot! If you have the time to set the right way....40 is a very reasonable distance, as long as the deer is not alert, I will concede that...I would wait for a flick of the ears, and it to lower it's head to feed. Then it's lights out! As far as the invitation to 3D with the southern guys......why thanks.....I'd love to..as long as I don't have to hear it all day about the politics of ethics, and whats right,,you see, I believe that what we have here is a conflict of culture. As an apex predator, I cannot assign a code of ethics to my food. I have to kill it to eat it, and I'm not too particular on how that's done. I rarely ever mount a head...I have one in my house..only because my dad made me do it when I was young. I hunt solely for the meat in my freezer, I do not consider this a "sport"....just like a mountain lion will get as close to it's prey before pouncing to assure success, so must we. But.....trust me....I was really thinking of letting the rear deer line up with the one on the left so I could take both with one shot!! Just kidding!!! ;D ;D ;D

;D Your in for a shock! I have had a few deer that were already wrapped and in the freezer when I released and then they were gone Animals aren't targets....they are going to do some amazing things and they aren't always going to telegraph what that is going to be before they do it That would be the correct manner in placing this shot but the deer in the picture isn't doing any of that and on a slow walk will have made a 18" adjustment by the time the arrow arrives if it does not stop dead cold during that time. I don't see the need to wound in order to kill If you cant kill it for sure then why shoot? I am sure that your no different than me and that the process of spending the remainder of the day tracking an animal that will never be found doesn't excite either of us I know that you have ethics The same ethics that forced you to track a bird for 1/2 a day because of two feathers that held blood (out of two handfuls) would cause you to do the same with any animal....those are good ethics When you say that you would wait for the deer to be head down and standing before the shot.....those are good ethics Someone without ethics would fling an arrow without thought ... on hope only and then skip the rest if that arrow didn't hit the killing area. SEE!.....your just like me ;D Of course you thought about it....you didn't say you were going to do it did you?! You are a very ethical person and instead of running from that fact you should embrace it You dint have to be defensive for your actions when you think them through as you seem to have done [/quote]
