Unless I had already put an arrow in the deer. Todays bows are efficient, but I don't think its fair to the animal. I think they have as good a chance as hitting the legs and gut as the lungs. I mean at that distance for the AVERAGE hunter its unrealistic to expect to put your arrow in the vitals 80%. Even for an experienced archer that is quite ridiculous This is my point. It is a matter of ethics which should determine the shot. The animal and not pride should dictate a shot being taken or not taken. At least that is my take on it. As I have said .... I have been guilty of dropping the hammer on a deer which I believed I could take clean but at the same time....there was a question in my mind. Had there had not been the question of possible failure then the question of I believe I can wouldn't have crossed my mind. I think that perhaps the ethical shot is one where you simply draw on the target animal without thought. That may be the best indicator of ethical range. If I have to say to myself.... let me see then I need to see the situation for what it is

By no means am I trying to encourage a 100 yard shot. I'm merely saying that if someone has the capability of doing so successfully, they shouldn't be slammed.

Well, count me out of the hundred yard club, (just yet). Just spent an hour looking for arrows in the woods. I'm sure many of you know the sound of an arrow pinging from tree to tree through the forest. I almost did it, which means I will do it. It might just cost a little more than I thought. I was doing good at 90.

I know that I would not take a 100 yd shot but I am sure that there are people that are capable of being accurate at that distance. I feel like a big part of bowhunting is the challenge of getting up close to the game. If you want to shoot 100 yards at game you should be hunting with a rifle. Here is a simply (and to the heart of it) statement. I agree with this mind set with a twist. I have always said that there are more animals then I have arrows so if one isn't close enough there will be one coming along that will be closer eventually

While looking for arrows a thought struck me. What kind of sight can accomodate 20 to 100 yds? My first pin ( on a seven pin sight) was set at 30 yds. to get the 7th pin at 90 yds. That's where the problem started, when I had to compensate the extra ten yds. to hit 100. So who is out in the woods with a sight that can go from 20-25 to 100 yds. Do you go out with a sight set to a minimum of 30?(Your seventh pin will still be at 90), so 40?. Okay, so my bow is only shooting 360gr. arrows at 256fps. I'm sure there are faster bows with lighter arrows that can overcome this hurdle a little better , but how much? After thinking this out it doesn't seem possible to even consider this shot, unless as some have suggested, you are plains hunting with the full intention of pulling off this kind of shot, because it is the norm and you are well experienced with this type of shooting.JMHO

Most mid west hunters I have talked with in the past have their sights set 40-60-80
Shooting the gap is easier and anything under 40 is unlikely as I have been told.
None the less.....

Wait a minute! I must have had my head in the sand here The real question I want to know is this..... What broadhead are you shooting out to 100 yards? Look at that pic of the field archers!.....those are field tips and 12" groups!!

The width of each color zone is 12.2 (4.8 inches) centimeters and the width of each scoring zone -- half of a color zone -- is 6.1 (2.4 inches) centimeters.
