I followed the suggestion from another bowhunter in 2005 and it worked great!. The recommendation was to take a few sheet rock screws,a driver and a plastic jar of peanut butter and take it to a likely area. You screw the lid of the jar to the tree and then screw the jar back on so that it sits horizontal to the ground. Then you simply cut the very end off and thats it. He was saying that if a buck was coming to it they would also rub the tree and therefore you could get a good guess as to size Well it worked perfectly and I do indeed have not only that tree but others as well in the same area. The deer hit it a few times and then pretty much let it go so the idea of putting it up a day or two before opener would be my suggestion

It would be legal in NC. And it sounds just wacky enough to give it a try to see what happens. We certainly know that squirrels love the stuff, and so do my dogs, so why wouldn't the deer?

Not legal in NY for hunting but conditioning is another thing If I happen to pack a peanut butter sandwich for first days lunch and leave it on the ground under my stand......

We put out a couple of jars like that last year and the tore the jar off of the tree!! They also work pretty well by just digging a hole in the ground and burying it with the lid off. It opens it up to a lot of other critters, but we've had luck with it on a crossing with not a lot of trees right near the trail.

I may have a hard time shooting one if I am laughing if they do th tongue thing that dogs do...just licking their lips over and over for five minutes....how can I keep a straight face and line up my pin? ?? Even funnier if the whole herd is just walking in circles doing that while I laugh out loud as they cuss silently under their breath.
