I just figured we'd get this section up and rocking again.
In NY my father hunted one stand all of last season. He saw only bucks because we killed every doe we had seen on that particular property the year before and early on this past season. In aprox, 15 times on stand he saw at least 1 buck every sitting. Usually 3 or more. He shot one and passed on deer every day, waiting for one of the big ones to get in range. One evening he was on stand and had quite a few bucks on a ridge above him. They started fighting with each other and were running around. Maybe there was a doe in heat up there. After the fighting stopped he grunted a few times. A large buck came to the edge of the ridge and "growled". He said it was like a cow with a roar mixed in. It was very loud. It seems that this is the sound the Drurys and MAD calls heve re-created with their new call. I believe it was Dr Grant Woods that believes that deer have always made the sound but didn't need to make it often. The closer teh ratios get to 1:1, the more we will likely here it. It is almost always used during the rut and involves sexual fustration. I see this call having a use on well managed land, used sparingly. I know at least one member here has already bought one. I hope it will help him tie a tag on a bruiser this year. It'll be interesting to hear the reports after the season. I think any calls can in the right situation help a lot. I have twice rattled in deer, one got the business end of an easton, the other I passed. I gave my buddy my rattle bag after I shot my deer. He killed an 8pt the first time he used it, I've killed a number of deer with the "can" call. The "growl" may not be a bad thing to have in the arsenal.
