Notice that some commercially made arrows have the glue applied to the shaft, not the vane, when being fletched. (Evident from thin even layer of glue on both sides, front and back of vane.) Anyone try doing that? If so, how'd it work?

I have done that in incidents where adhesion was poor. I would put a thin layer on the shaft and the vane. Once tacky, I would then put the vane to the shaft. Worked great when I had to do it.
