so I am really thinking about looking into a Cape Buff hunt. Not this year of course, but in the not so far off future. Most places have a minimum of 80# KE and a 750grain arrow. My bow now maxes out at 87#'s and gives me 98#'s KE with 750grains. Now if i do this, i want overkill. I have seen minimums and have seen them fail terribly on buffs. This would be a a once in a lifetime hunt for sure and I don't want ANY problems, especially with an animal that can and will kill me if given the chance. everything about the set up i want has been running through my mind. I have decided to stick with my Vulcan. I have looked at a faster bow, such as the Elite or Alligence but the draw cycle is pretty harsh on them when we talk about the heavy weights. The Vulcan seems to me to be 10#'s lighter in draw when comparing them. I talked with Hoyt and although they only advertize limbs up to 80#'s(what I have now) they will make any weight limbs for me for an additional $75(on the original limb price). since I can get 87#'s out of my limbs, it would be silly to get 90's....especially if those limbs really only give me a bit over 90. I have settled on 100# limbs. That should get me around 255FPS with a 750grain arrow and 108KE. I was thinking of going heavier in arrow weight, but my KE will actually drop off with 800grains and my momentum is plenty good with 750grains. Of course it will be topped off with a Silver flame. Has anyone here done this type of hunt before? Does anyone have any suggestions? I think that should just about cover my rig.........now I just need to get approved for the loan

While you can get custom limbs for the Hoyt, the bow is probably not really designed for that weight. Have you thought about the PSE "Big 5" Bow which is orderable and DESIGNED for 100# limbs? If you call a PSE dealer or PSE direct you can get just the bow. You don't have to buy the whole package. The XForce will also allow you almost the same Ke with a lot less weight. The X Forceā¢ has an IBO speed range of 350-342 fps producing an amazing 93 foot-pounds of Kinetic Energy.

I have shot the big 5 bow from PSE and was not thrilled with it. Hoyt has overbuilt the bow and said it will have no prblems with the heavy draw weight. They have one of the strongest risers on the market and the Vulcan is short, so it's stronger.
I shot the X-Force last night. It was a pretty nice bow. I really liked the draw cycle on it, all the weight was right in the front of the draw. I don't think it's as fast as they are claiming though. we shot a 335grain arrow out of a 67# 29" X-force. It's a 5gpp but only 29" draw. It had nothing on the string except for a single brass nock. It was shooting 321FPS. The Vulcan at 70#'s/29" with a 350grain arrow with a loop and string silencers was 312FPS and the allegience set up the exact same way as the Vulcan was 316FPS.
I am gonna check into Hoyt Warrentees and see if they cover 100# limbs. I know that BT and Mathews does not cover anything over 70#'s. i know Hoyt covers my 80#ers....we'll see.

Yea, the "Big 5" is really a beefed up Vengeance if I remember right. I'm surprised at your X-Force speeds. Is the shop PSE friendly? I know my more local PSE dealer set my friends PSE up way worse than when we took it to the 'PSE friendly' PSE Dealer 1-1/2Hr away. His bow shot totally different after getting it done up the second time. Almost everyone is reporting true speeds with IBO arrows if their bow is set up and timed right, deducting a bit for less than 30" draw and any additional weight other than Loop and Peep. I'd have to go where there is warranty. Hate to have bow blow and not have it covered.

The shop dosen't push PSE's but it was set up right because we were hoping to get a really fast set up. It was still quick, just not as fast as they are saying........unless they are getting more speed per inch that most other bows.....which is possible. It was getting 295fps with a 415 grain arrow at 29" and 67#'s. Thats a pretty good speed for that arrow and draw weight.
I have shot the PSE Gorilla at 95#'s, the Big 5 at 90#'s, the allegeince at 92#'s and the Mathews Safari at 100#'s. I believe the only one under warrentee is the PSE but I'm not even sure. I know a few guys who have done "big" and had very good luck with the BT's and Hoyts. Out of those two i would go with the Hoyt alone for limb strength. I am pretty much set on what bow i'm going with, just wondering what weight I need.

Odd how it's getting harder to find a heavy bow anymore. Used to be that most everyone offered 100# to 110# average and spacial order added more weight.

Yeah, i just checked the specs on the PSE Big 5. It is rated at 300-308IBO so pound for pound the vulcan will be faster and generate more KE. It is rated at 325FPS. I also just checked the price.........it's $1500.

I am not saying the Big 5 is a great choice. Just it met 100# max and would be warrantied. The $1500 price is the package, you can get just the bow for less.
For me, I would have to take a warrantied bow. My wife would KILL me (if I did not die anyway) for wrecking a high end bow, let alone a custom one. I bet that if Hoyt sells custom limbs that they will warranty them as well.
I tried the Ultratech and Vtech when I was buying and they shot great. They were close behind the Diablo and AR35 for me.
Take pics and a small vid if you go through with a Heavy LB Bow. I've never seen anyone shoot over 80#. I bet it is an experience.

Yeah, for sure. my normal hunting/3D bow is 80#'s. I shot it maxed for a bit when it was first set up at 87#'s and it wasn't as bad as it sounds. Don't get me wrong. i can't shoot a 5 spot round with it. But 20 arrows without a break isn't bad. I want a heavy bow, but not if it hurts my accuracy.....we'll see what i do.

God d%$mn PSE.....I am 100% sure that you got the right info on the speed...are you at FLYING Arrow? That's it, one too many lies...I was actually thinking of seriously looking at that bow, even after all the problems (which by the way are back), with the Mach X...what a piece of junk, but anyway, that's it, never again, I think that dare I say, I might just have to go HOYT!!!
