Not that I am an expert but I have been around plenty of them. You want an opinion?....dont worry about getting a good shot because it's like shooting at a car door....you wont miss Well.....most of us wont The biggest thing with Moose is getting them out or getting the truck to them. States like Maine wont allow you to field butcher a Moose for transport. So if you have one put a few hundred yards between you and the road you are going to wish you had never gone Moose hunting Trust me here....hunt the roads and hunt the Rut when they wont run after you stick them Also keep in mind what my cousin the Maine told me. "I would rather be attacked by a bear than a Moose ... you may survive a bear attack but a Moose will only stop after he can no longer find any sign of you.... once finished with his stomping and grinding on the patch of ground where you last stood" ;D That being said...this is one animal I wouldnt hesitate to go after with my longbow because of that kill area alone. They are not a real tough animal once hit and will pretty much give out in short order as long as they are not all rutted up.

Dad and I got permits the same year (20 or so years ago). 7MM put then down fine. hehe.
Moose Burgers, Moose stew, moose jerky, moosey joes. We had so much meat that we were trading it for basically anything else edible. I still remember it to this day.
Hunting moose in the woods is not as easy as on the roads. The moose on the roads are used to vehicles and people (to a point). Moose in the woods KNOW you are not supposed to be there.
We tried woods hunting for a bit, then had to settle for road once we found we could not stalk into range in the deeper woods.
And we were lucky. We did not really, really, realize how big they were until after I got the first one. Our pal got one in the woods about 500 yards and it two lifted 4x4s to drag him out of the woods, and that was AFTER gutting him out using a come-along to hoist him into the tree.

You have to be 12 in Wyoming to hunt Big Game but he will be 12 sept 20 so he will catch the tail end of bow season and just in time for rifle. But I'd like to see him get it with a bow
