We all know or have heard of a deer "Jumping the string"
Today after my morning hunt I walked from my stand to
check out the winter rye I planted Friday.I harrowed the
lower half of my larger food plot and was worried because
we had a hard rain on Saturday.I needed to make sure I
hadn't lost every thing.I walked into the area down wind
and 10 steps into it I saw a single fawn entering from the
opposite side.I said "O CRAP" now I'm stuck.I squatted down
and could see she could not smell me and had the sun in
her eyes. She was coming right at me but started to cross
from my left to my right. She picked me out at about 60-70
feet but didin't know it was a person.I think she just saw
somthing she had not seen in that spot before. She kept
looking and eating. She would look then move eat and look.
Little deer BIG ears. She gave me a few head bobs but I
was sitting (in the mud)
.and solid as a rock. She was not
spooked but on aleart.Young deer this years no mother I
think? But the point I am trying to make is a hickory nut
drooped to my right as my eyes were glued on her.She dropped
down 10-12 inches the second that nut hit the ground or
stone wall
.It happened so fast I would never have seen it
if I wasn't locked on to her.The movement was down then up.
She was spring loaded for take off but never pulled the trigger.
I can now see how older deer would do the same thing but
be moving after the drop.I would love to see it in slow motion.
