Here's a Question I have, According to the contest any antlered animal can be entered, how about a buck in velvet? Just curious as our Mule deer are in velvet here during archery season and I know most record books include velveted animals but are in a different section. Also where can I find information on measuring a Muley as I'm sure it's probably slightly different? Any help would be great as I'll be pursueing Elk and Muleys this year and thought this contest sounded like fun. Ster

Ster As too measuring for this contest ... there is a visual on the first page that should help you out Velvet might give you a 1" advantage on height but it's going to have the same disadvantage on the inside width so I see no problems with an entry that is carrying velvet

In Indiana.....you are allowed one Buck per year to be taken by either bow or firearm. Anterless deer is a totally different subject. Each of our 92 Counties have a separate Doe bag limit. Anywhere from zero to eight. If you took your limit in all 92 Counties + your Buck you can kill a grand total of 329 deer! License fees are $24.75 for the first four and $15.00 thereafter. Several years ago I purchased a life time license so I have no cost. Best $ I have ever spent. Sounds as if my best chance is on the Doe side of things ;D

What type of enforcement does IN have in regards to ensuring that the does that are designated for each county are in fact taken in said county? And what would you say is the rate at which this does not happen?
None......... I have 24 hours to check any deer taken I don't even have to check it in the county it was killed. As a lifetime license holder I am allowed to make out my own temporary tag on any piece of paper to transport it to a check station. Unless authorities see you in the field with the deer, it is strickly your word. In regards to the rate people cheat, I'm afraid it happens all too often

Indiana has always been a state that is "behind the curve" in deer mgmt. We were late going to a doe season; for years we were Buck only. Now we have gone to the other extreme. The state has basicly declared war on deer in Indiana. As a very urban state we have a high number of deer car accidents and the herd has created a great deal of crop depredation. The insurance companies and farmers are demanding deer reduction.
Like you; our doe/buck ratio is really screwed up, so now we are trying to reverse bad decisions made years ago. (my opinion) A typical day on stand it isn't uncommon to see a dozen doe to a single buck. Our DNR now realizes that we must reduce the doe population........I don't think they are really concerned about "cheating" on doe numbers in most counties. In the areas where you are limited to just one or two does, well those are areas where people don't hunt that much anyway.
Not sure what the answer is?
