So - I talked with two guys I know about possible locations. One says that he hunted one of these area and can put me where the elk were for 5 years in a row... (He now hunts an area half as far away...) Unfortunately, Roger (The guy with the llama in the Novice thread) is out of town from Friday until next week, so I will have to wait to talk with him. And the other guy showed up at work with a map to offer some input as well - I've not had time to sit down with him yet to go over the map. That darned job of mine has been keeping me way to busy! Anyway, these should pan out some new spots to go look at in the next couple weekends for sure.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) also had something to say, this is the email I wrote (Lower) and what they sent back (Top) -

Question or Message: Sirs, I drew a limited elk archery tag for units *,*,*,*, and *. I scouted several locations over the weekend that had looked very promising on the map but I found either no sign at all or signs of very few animals around those areas. Who might I contact to find out more information about these units, animal populations, and access? I only get to hunt for the first two weekends this season (drat!) and am trying to figure out where my odds might be best. I am just looking for information and plan to spend three or four weekends scouting in August -I am just trying to determine where the better spots might be for the short amount of hunting time I have available this season and greatly appreciate any input you might be able to offer. Many thanks, Steve Jes sup

Yeah, I pulled out the units where I am going to be hunting and the phone number of the district manager. It is not the where, but rather the process that I thought important. The DOW is very approachable and they want to see you successful with your hunt and will help out as much as they can. They are a great resource and if you are headed out this way, you really should use them! I have not had a chance to call Mr. Jackson yet, but I will and I'll let you know how that goes! If you are going with an outfitter, you might drop the DOW an email and ask for a report on the one you are thinking about going with. You would want to ask first who to talk with about the unit you intend to hunt in, then go to that person to ask about an outfitter. I don't know what you might get back for sure, maybe nothing, but it is another source of information worth using.
Since I've no new spots to go check out this weekend, I guess I'll work on a bow and maybe go ride my motorcycle this weekend!
