Cost of the hog...
I just finished cutting up and trimming my hog of all the excess fat, gristle and other waste and this is what it came down to.
This was a 200# plus hog.
Front shoulder #1............................. 11.9 lb.
Front shoulder #2............................. 11.3 lb.
Hind quarter (Ham) #1...................... 22.5 lb.
Hind quarter (Ham) #2...................... 23.3 lb.
Loin #1.............................................. 5.5 lb.
Loin #2.............................................. 5.9 lb.
Back strap #1 .................................... 3.8 lb.
Loin #2.............................................. 3.5 lb.
Total ribs weight ............................... 16.2 lb.
Total weight of meat after trimming
excess fat, gristle and other waste...103.9 lbs.
The back straps were 14" long
Loins were 31-32" long.
Cost of the hog was 103..9 lb @ $550.00
Cost per lb. $550.00 divided by 103.9 = $5.29 per lb.
Compare this to $7-$8 per lb for pork in the supermarket!
The rest of the cost for lodging, food, gasoline (mine was about $150.00)is made up in the fun, excitement and adventure of the hunt....not to mention the memories and photos.
This is a great deal for a hunter no matter how you look at it!
So.....if you haven't hunted hogs, you owe it to yourself to give it a go! After making this trip with BT, IMO, just the memories, the fun, the excitement and the "rush" not to mention just the time spent in those woods with a good friend sharing that adventure together would be worth it all to me even if I gave all the meat away!
