I can understand the frustration, as I have walked my two sons,(now 22 and 20) through this obstacle course, and it isn't easy. The best I can come up with, in short is,"to each his own", it will have to be explained that we share the outdoors with others,(I know, I wish they were all mine too), What if it was a rabbit hunter, grouse hunter, duck hunter, or squirrel hunter, should they also stay out of the woods while I deer hunt? They could possibly be thinking the same of me. My best advice,( and I hunt in a very populated area), is to scout out stands away from the majority of the traffic, even if they are not the very best spots, the quality time spent with your son will be far more memorable to him than the game seen. Good luck.

I had a good and respected friend PM regarding his concern with crossbow hunting, especially in places where crossbows are legal in the woods during archery season. I am in agreement with him. I sent the following PM, but thought it was worth copying here: You and I are in full agreement...I have no plans of using mine during bow season. In Florida it is not even legal. We have a 6 day only crossbow season. My primary motivation was to get my 12-year-old in the woods before gun season. ( I thought the above was the point of this thread... It even states that neither would use the crossbow during the regular archery season... How this got tracked over to all the other fine points is really rather fun to speculate on! Red goes on to state that the young man referred to is not strong enough, due to age, to pull a bow yet, and offers this as an option to get this same young man in the woods hunting sooner - rather than later. AND - during an established crossbow season, has nothing to do with archery season or rifle season. This is an established crossbow season. There is nothing to argue about other than whether this young man should be kept out of the woods a couple more years until he matures a bit, and has the strength to draw a regular bow or take the recoil of a larger caliber rifle. On top of of that - this thread is in the crossbow section... A section set aside for those who actually like crossbows or are curious about them and want to learn. This is why I refuse to go in to detail about my own experiences and why my opinions are what they are. This is not the thread for that information to be posted. I think we all owe Red an apology. So Red, I am sorry if I helped this post take a turn off topic. Further - as I said before, I think you are spot on to get that young man in the woods hunting as soon as you can. If that means crossbow, and you have a season for it, why not? It is hunting, after all, and the point is (I assume) to get the young man hunting...

Hey SMJ...no apologies necessary on my part. I saw the thread take its share of "digressions". I enjoy the lively dialogue and admire how the majority of it remained very respectful. On the subject of crossbows in the woods, I still contend that Florida has done a good job of addressing the situation. It allows everyone to have their time in the woods. The subject of dog hunting was also part of my original thread and a primary reason for my crossbow purchase. To date, I've not seen anyone defend this approach to hunting. I am afraid "to each his own" won't cut it. As I stated before, any activity which prevents fellow hunters from being able to enjoy and hunt in the same area is one which can't be justified. Running dogs through the woods is pretty much the same as running 4-wheelers under folks stands and/or hunting from them...unfortunately I've also had that done to me. I still have an open ear if someone can explain it to me, although I am dubious. It certainly does not have to be in this section of the forum. As SMJ pointed out, this section is for those you are interested in learning more or want to share their knowledge or experience with crossbows. Most likely, I should have started the thread elsewhere, so my apologies may be in order.

I will start another post in another section regarding the use of dogs. It is rather wordy and I type slow so it will be tomorrow. I will describe dog hunting to those who are unfamiliar with it.
I agree with RED concerning Florida's approach to crossbows. So far they have been pretty fair and level headed about it. There is not a lot of controversy here. The only change I would like to see is to allow the killing of does during crossbow season. That way youngsters and women would have a better chance at shooting something. If they never have the opportunity to kill something, their interest will die pretty fast.
That is why small game season is the best way to introduce someone to hunting. Plenty of opportunities.

I think we all owe Red an apology. What?! He started this whole mess...no way! LOL...Red, you know I'm messing with you buddie. I think it's fine to introduce kids into the sport with any legal tool available. The key factor here is training. I feel that my dad instilled many of the safety rules that I follow today. I remember when I first started hunting with "buddies", and being horrified at their ethics, safety, and hunting skills. They just didn't have the right upbringing, or someone that cared enough to teach them. And by the time I knew them, it was too late, they were ruined already. Hopefully, he grows up to shoot a Diamond like his dad!

We agree on 99% and certainly on how important it is to instill the correct values in your youngsters regardless of the weapon.

Interesting thread, once you peel off the bs. I shot my 1st compound bow in 1989. It had all the bells and whistles of it's day, including an 'over-draw'. I remember thinking there's no way I'd ever own one of these and have that bhead behind my wrist, lol.
It had sights! Another 1st. I put my 1st five arrows into a group the size of a coffee cup at 25 yards. Granted, off 6" at 10 o'clock, but easily fixed had I owned the bow.
Fast forward 18 yrs. My next compound shot was at 30 yds, I missed the 'X' by maybe 2". "Vixenmaster" was in attendance. I should have quit there.
My next shot was from a sexy lookin recurve. At about 15 yds, I missed the target by 4' and stuck an arrow in the fender of my 4 whlr.
I find the 'superior weapon' theories when discussing xbow vs compound hilarious at best.
Xbows have been legal here in Ar for about 30 yrs. We take about 3-5% of the total harvest.
Have a good season.

I started a poll on AT to see what weapon people would choose if they could only choose one throughout the entire season. Just as I predicted earlier in this thread, there was a fair amount of people who chose scoped rifle...and that's on a hardcore archery site...and of course compound bow was #1. And as I also predicted, the crossbow was only chosen over a slug gun. The muzzleloader is coming in third..I think I predicted 10%...so I was close, but a little under. Lack of trad guys on that site though...I can understand that. Anyway, my point has always been that I just don't think the crossbow should be allowed during the bow season, but fine for any other season. It's just my opinion, and if it did happen, and became legal, then that's just the way it goes. I don't make policy, I just follow it. The poll was meant, however, to show that the crossbow would get little support if another weapon, such as a firearm were introduced into the mix. The evidence is overwhelming. You have to vote to see the results I believe..give it a look, and the comments are actually pretty civil for AT, although I did have to break out the "Troll Spray" on one guy..lol... www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1298700&page=1
