I went out this afternoon and as I was getting out of my truck, the landowner came out to talk for a bit. He asked me where all the deer have been, because he hasn't seen many. I told him that last night i saw 18 deer and killed 2 just 2 houses down from him but that the deer were hanging out on the property that runs behind their houses. No one has permission to hunt there and it's easy to watch deer, just harder to get them onto the right property. He told me that he has permission to hike that property and he was thinking about taking a walk before the snow started. He said he would plan his route so that if he bumped any deer they would hopefully come my way. He asked if that was OK........hell yeah thats ok!
Well after about an hour on stand I looked about 250yds out and saw him headed my way. I grabbed my bow and got ready. I saw a nice 8pt with a limp heading through the brush but 100yds out and moving parellel to me. I realized that this was the 8pt that Ray shot low on last year and broke his right front leg. I watched him until he vanished into some heavy brush and I couldn't see the landowner either. I knew if he cam right out me the deer would go the other way, but if he took the upper trail I might be in luck. well sure enough the buck came into an opening at 50yds and was headed my way. He trotted onto the property I was hunting and as he passed at 20yds I "bleated" at him. He stopped with most of his vitals behind a tree, but the very front of his chest was just showing. I touched off and sent a spitfire through his heart. He bolted 20yds, tipped over and rolled 20yds down towards the truck! The landowner showed up 30 seconds later and I waved him over. He was pumped for me and that he played a big part in taking this buck. The buck is 3.5 and was pretty darn heavy. I haven't thrown a tape to him but should be about 19" inside spread and go between 115" and 120". I was pumped as this buck had been on the "hit list" since we saw him in the summer. Ray was very excited as he was really hoping someone would get him to complete the story.
I was also excited to be able to put another deer on the meat rack for our friends. Thats 4 for them this week.
That's one awesome landowner Wish there were more out there like him...
Congrats on taking out that buck, deer are just so ungodly tough sometimes...
Yeah he is great, last year he pushed 8 deer to me by accident and i shot 2 of them, so this time he made it a point to try and get some deer my way. Deer can be super tough, it's amazing what they can live through.
