I was shocked when Michigan allowed limited use of crossbows. Now, it's New York's turn, when will the light be seen, if ever

Only one person starts hunting for every three that leave the sport. If WE hunters don't get our act together to at least maintain our numbers, the bunny huggers will prevail!

The bill introduced in 2007 to legalize xbow hunting for disabled died in committee in 2009. Lack of legislators support. It will probably take a lot of letters from NY votes to their legislators to get another bill and the support needed for passage. Ghost

It seems in Conn. if you have a hang nail you can get one. I just was told of two guys I know that got them .One is overweight and the other is just fine ???They are both big time gun hunters and think they can shoot deer the same way.I think they will find out it's not that easy. ;D.JMO

Even at 350ft/sec, I get alot of drop with my crossbow. It's just the nature of the beast. I've got scope settings all the way out to 67yds, but I still setup so my shots will hopefully be less than 30yds. Just like my compound. If the deer is past 35yds, I feel I need to range it with my rangefinder first so I know precisely what my holdover will be. Most of the time there's too much limbs and brush in the way to chance a shot....

Honestly...I could care less what anyone hunts with. It's pretty hard to understand the mind set that is o.k. with a gun but not a crossbow. The biggest concern is with the crossbow being made legal during archery season.
For NY...I do see the point ....in as much as it would make the death rate (due to hunting accidents) spike. You can believe the idiots that are lurking around the woods when gun season starts! Imagine having that same idiot out there during archery season?!.
I think thats the #1 reason that people here in NY dont want the crossbow....too many idiots.

I didn't vote cause being from KY I don't have much of a clue what the state government is like in New York. With that said, I would have a hard time imaging that it won't be long though. Here in KY, the crossbow season has increased every year for the past 3 years or so. Its now over a month long and I expect it will be the entire archery season in the near future. The KY State Fish and Wildlife are practically begging hunters to kill deer as I expect is the case in NY. With each generation it seems less and less people pass on hunting, so the only way for hunters to take more deer is to extend the season. I personally don't use a crossbow and won't unless I become unable to archery hunt, but I say let them use a crossbow. Just make them take the Hunter Safety Test BT eluded to in another post ;D

It hasn't happened yet in any of the States that have introduced the crossbow into the regular archery season. Much of the ambivalence is simply fear of the unknown. I'll tell you what you will see. You'll see a spike in the number of kids, females, and older folks taking part in the archery season. Go onto the Ohio Division look at the hunting gallery. If it's a female bowhunter, 9 times out of 10, she's got a crossbow leaning up against the side of her trophy
