Ray was shooter today and i was again camera man. We moved into the woods along the stone wall we have been seeing deer follow. I set up on one side of a ATV type trail and Ray was on the other. The wind was perfect!
Around 4:15 we saw 1 doe across the field but other than that there was no activity.
At 5:15 a 3 pointer came BLASTING in at a full run chasing what we presume was a button buck. They looped our trees and ran off. No shots and no film. It was really strange.
About an hour later we were watching the 3 pointer and a doe feed in a small opening about 150yds away. The wind was still perfect. They didn't seem to want to go anywhere because they had found a freshly fallen beech tree.
10minutes later Ray looks at me and mouths........"Big Buck"......."an 8 pointer"
I look up and sure enough there is a big mature 8 feeding with the other deer. A little time goes by and they still haven't come or gone. I look at Ray and motion for him to get his rattle bag out and rattle a little. He procedes to look at me like I asked him to step off his treestand. After I "mimed" some re-assurance, he rattles. The buck looks up and gets real interested. He turns to the 3pointer and starts to spar. A minute later Ray hits it again. The buck thrashes some brush and paws the ground. Another minute and hit it again..........here he comes. He's on a mission. He gets the wall that runs along Rays left side and stops. He looks around, checks the air and turns along the trail toward Ray. At 30yds he passes behind a tree, the Trykon comes to full draw. The 8 is still coming. At 28yds he stops and turns slightly, giving Ray a slight quartering towards shot. Not Ideal, but enough vitals are exposed for the spitfire to make short work of the deer. I see Ray take aim out of the corner of my eye while I double check the viewfinder. The shot...........goes high The luminock leaves nothing to wonder about. The deer bounds 10yds up hill and stops broadside to look around. Ray grabs another arrow, draws guesses 40yds, levels his pin and shoots.............just high again. this time the big guy decides to leave. We decided to as well.
Fun afternoon for sure but it should have ended better. The first shot Ray just blew, a combination of Buck Fever and a little TP. His pins hit hair and he released without holding steady. The second shot was very close, perfect windage just a tad high. He held for 40 and the deer was only 35yds or so. He's bummed but we're gonna get back in the thick of it tomorrow afternoon. I wanna set up by the down beech because there were at least 6 deer up there. Hopefully all the kinks are out now and we can get down to business.
This is not the biggest deer on the property but he is really nice. I still really believe that as long as we keep moving stands and keep the wind in our favor, we'll put a tag on him..........as long as he dosen't go nocturnal. If he does........we'll just hit him during the rut or just target a bigger one
Just gotta stay positive!
