New deer management law in Illinois

The Illinois gov. sign in to law a new non-lethal way to manage deer populations.

Here is a copy of the law:

Section 5. The Wildlife Code is amended by adding Section
2.39 as follows:

(520 ILCS 5/2.39 new)
Sec. 2.39. Local control of deer population. A municipality
or other unit of local government that conducts a scientific
study, of at least 4 years and approved by the Department, on
controlling the deer population, using a method in addition to
taking of the deer, in that municipality or other unit of local
government and concludes, as a result of that study, that the
deer population of the municipality or other unit of local
government may be managed, using that alternative method, in a
way that results in sustainable deer populations, then the
Department must permit the municipality or other unit of local
government to implement the alternative method of deer
population control on the lands of that municipality or other
unit of local government at the municipality's or unit of local
government's own expense. The municipality or unit of local
government must report to the Department, on an annual basis,
the local deer population count, as required by administrative
rule.

This Section is repealed on January 1, 2014.

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
becoming law.

Effective Date: 8/28/2007

Any thoughts?? Illinois bow hunters are not happy.

Ah Yes!....what a crock ;D

The alternatives have been done to death up this way and all of them cost big bucks while having a success rate , no better than the local traffic during the course of the year

What are we talking about in this instance?....birth control
Done it here....doesnt work.
It does (on the other hand) cost alot and give generous kick backs which line the pockets of those who vote for it's implementation I believe

I was thinking the same thing...what the heck are they talking about...and skip's right...or at least I hope he is....if they dart them or introduce some sort of chemical into the deer, it had better be fit for consumption....unless they find that as a reason not to consume deer! You never know with these people..

I have done some checking and talked to a retired wildlife biologist and he says what the suburbs in northern Illinois want to try will work if carried out by well trained people and there is lots and lots of money. ;D The plan will only effects female deer.

The plan: Use a cannon net system to trap deer and then surgical sterilize the does. No further dollars required after a small fortune for the inital sterization. ;D

The catch is the state will not fund the study or the plan requiring the local government to raise taxes...........now that will really be popular. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Up date on the deer population control plan, the municipalities do plan to dart the deer and the sterilize the does. The DNR would not do it because the estimtated cost per deer is $4000 to $5000 and the problem with tranquilizing animals of unknown size and weight.

There is probably no problem with unknown effect on darting drugs on humans because these deer are never hunted.......that is the reason for the over population.

Urban control hunts are the way to go. we have seen great success in nearby towns by using qualified bowhunters. It costs the town nothing and the deer are getting thined. About 10 of us were able to take 90 something deer this season on town owned lands where hunting has never been allowed.
The twon next to this one hire snipers with night vision and silencers the year before. they took close to 200 deer but charged the town close to $500 a deer!
Bowhunters are free and it does work well.

There have been a couple to trial tests using bowhunters and the "don't kill bambi" people came out in mass with signs and TV coverage and the hunts just faded.

Even though it is illegal to feed deer in Illinois (fear of speading CWD) these people would publicly say things like, those deer are my pets and I feed them in the back yard and those killers (hunters) are going to kill my deer.

There are two groups of people in problem areas, one groups is saying get rid of the d** deer and I don't care how it is done and the other it is "don't kill my babies". The next few years should be real interesting, I just hope it not be beginning of the end of hunting in Illinois.

Last year they came out in mass to protest the town hunting, but the town board said it was the best solution and tried last year gun only and only on one property. the protests eventually faded and this year we had a "test" season with the bows. no real protests this year and the hunting was a sucess
