Yup!....this is why I am not against the crossbow although I don't plan on using one. To much fear mongering over a weapon that is no more capable that a compound. Good post Michi

I'm neither for or against the crossbow per se. If it's a legal means of hunting, then by all means, use it!!

Reading that article made my eyes bleed. It went in circles, the writer contradicts himself a number of times, and uses statements out of context to defeat his own logic.
Just one example that is supposed to be Pro-Crossbow, but then becomes Anti-Crossbow, then implies no one should be bow/crossbow hunting anyway.
" It begs the following question: Shouldn't we all strive to do everything we can to ensure quick and humane kills for the game we hunt? I certainly think so. This point may not hold much water, though -- because calling the crossbow more efficient in the field (whether due to it holding its draw or for other reasons) is obviously questionable, as we've already determined."
let me rephrase. Crossbows are self held which limits one factor that often leads to misses. So the crossbow is more efficient because it is self held and we want to hunt more humanely, so we want to use crossbows. But Crossbows are not more efficient, so.......
So we dont want to use crossbows? So we should all be using guns? And we should not use bullets, but instead high doses of sleeping agents and darts?
Uggghhh... Reminds me why about.com is usually on my 'do not read' list. You guys tricked me back into that horrible world.

I'm not sure I follow your train of thought here. What the author says in my opinion is that some think they are more efficient than a compound bow and that is not necessarily true. As a result, the crossbow might be a good choice but not necessarily for that reason.

If you did not understand the topic as well as you do would you have been able to make heads or tails of the article?

You may have a point there Shaman. But I think it's written toward the hunting crowd more than the inexperienced. Of course I'm somewhat biased when it comes to Russ Chastain too. He's written a lot of articles that have touched a spot in my heart.
