Dimensions of a deer

I want to make marks on my sight that will represent the thickness of an adult Northern deer from the top of the back to bottom of the belly. I will make two lines on my target with black tape and then extend my bow arm as if shooting and look at these marks from distances of 30 and 40 yards and mark that on the sight. I beleive the back to belly distance to be 18 inches. What do you guys think? I know there is a device on the market that does this already but you know me. I want to make it myself.

MAKES SENSE.

The one problem I always had with the system is that you can have a deer that is above or below average and that can throw the system out at 30yrds. and beyond.

Lets say that the average chest is 18" and a 22" walks out at 40 yards.
On the ring that deer is going to appear to be closer and you may shoot it for 35.

I don't know.....it can work but I don't trust the system myself.

Here I often get deer around 120#'s when I head west or north the deer are much bigger. especially if we are talking a doe here and a buck there. the 9pt I shot in IL last year was 275#'s on the hoof. it would be tough for a system like that to work unless you always shot similar size deer from the same height on level terain.

2 Chucks: yep you are correct...the device you're talking about works close enough for "guvvamint work." The manufacturer suggests that the height is 17 inches on AVERAGE. All you have to do is make a 17" tall mark next to your target and start playin around til you get the 20, 30, and 40 dialed in. If you have a pendulum, I can help you with the locked down 40 yd setting with the Pendulum Upgrade. You get a dot on a glo background you can add to your current pendulum pin if it is a bottom mounted pin....gives yu 40 on the ground, and gives you....pretty far out when you're up inna tree. Upgrade can be had for $1.50 plus shipping(a stamped self addressed envelope).
