Well then here it is.
“SHOOTING THE MOON”
The year was 1984 and the start of the deer season was here. I had gotten ready for the season early as I new I had to have a rifle and not hunt this year with the trusty old single shot 20 gauge full choke. Slugs and full choke don’t mix well you know. You must realize this was my first year of deer hunting and I had to be ready.
My first day out with my new rifle with a couple of boxes through it by me and excited as could be. My Dad decided to stay with me for the day and off we went. We crossed the brook and headed up to what was nothing more than a more open area in the woods but my Dad had put a stand in it so we affectionately called it “Buddy’s Park”.
As we started into the area we crept along very slowly and would stop often to watch. We arrived at about the middle of “The Park” and had stop to listen and watch. Now you need to know that I was used to break action weapon and was now carrying a lever action 32 special in the woods for the first time.
All of a sudden I saw the beast of a deer coming right towards me. I mean it could not get any more face on if it had tried as was less than 25 yards from me. I could see it clearly but my father only new something was up by the look on my face. I started to try and pull the hammer back on the riffle and missed it at least three times with the thumb. At that point I laid my hole hand on the back of the rifle and slid it down the back side to force the hammer back. Now at this point I can hardly breathe and my heart has beet a hole through my coat and is now on my sleeve. I never took my eyes of the deer at any time but as I began to look down the barrel (notice how I put that) I herd my father say, “Now take your time and get a good” BANG “ bead on him”. The deer turned from his face to face stare with me and took off to my left and now my father could see him going.
With the deer gone and only the sound of my heart on my sleeve still pumping very fast my father looks at me and says, “ Now are you sure you had a good sight on him?” I turn and look at my father with a blank look on my face and still having a hard time to breath I say, “Dad I honestly don’t remember looking at the sights”. With a chuckle under his breath he says, “What I don’t understand is why you didn’t get a second shot off. After all you have that lever action and it should have given you enough time to reload and fire?”
I look down realizing the old instincs of the break action had kicked in and I was trying to break the weapon down to reload. I look at my father and slowly pumped out the empty and in went the live round. “I forgot I had the lever Dad.” I said and with some laughter from my dad he says “Well we still have to make sure you didn’t hit that beast.) I even had enough time to count all eight of the points on that deer while it stood there and looked at me. Buck fever or what.
Well the deer was not hit and that night we told the story to my Uncle who was in camp with us. He laughed and said, “ I bet he shot the moon with that shot.”
The moon never came up that night and man o man did I take a teasing for that.
